Hi I'm planning on getting a DVD burner. It doesn't seem like such a huge investment anymore. I just have a few quick question, (I've heard some people talking about burning DVD and it sounds like a giant pain in the ass that only works half the time, the way they describe it)

1. I'm planning on getting the Lite on sohw16732 Dual Layer DVD burner, is that a decent machine?

2. What is the most compatable and high quality dvd media type(dvd-r, dvd-rw etc)and brands

3. Are there any dvds that I could buy from Wal-mart, Meijer, or Blockbluster, Family Video that would not copy for some gay ass reason? I've heard that video rental places are trying to do something to their dvd's to make them uncopy-able.

4. Is it safer to burn dvd's at a somewhat lower speed such as 4X?

5. Will my lite on come with decent enough software.

P.S. I'm not planning on pirating movies from Family Video or Blockbuster but I have bought some videos from them that I'd like to back up.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any input I could get from anyone who has the time to answer any or all of these questions. Thanks alot.

Lite-On(s) is(are) good burners, however, some members in here prefer the Plextor, LG and BenQ though.

Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan). However, I prefer the 8X DVD+R Taiyo Yuden or Maxell (mij) from my own experiences.

There's no such thing as "uncopyable" -- if you're talking about "encrypted protections," then yes.... but then again, you have DVD Decrypter, DVDFab Decrypter, AnyDVD, DVDIdle Pro and DVDRegion+CSS Free. So you don't need to worry period.

Yes, it's much safer to burn at lower speed such as 2X and 4X, but it's not mandatory. I've burned at 8X speed with top notch media such as Taiyo Yuden and it's flawless in results. However, I would "not" recommend going beyond 8X period.

More likely Nero will come along with your Lite-On burner. Now all you need is DVD Decrypter (free - arguably one of the best ripper), DVD Shrink (free), DVDFab Decrypter (free) and you should be all set for a newbie.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.
