I think that my laser is finaly going out, can anyone conferm or offer other suggestions as to what may be wrong. I have several backups that played at one time, example: Burnout 3. When I first burned it it played fine, that was about three weeks ago. I tried it again this weekend and I got the red mist "Not a valid PS2 disk" screen. I use swap magic version 3.6 and after I swap I get a black screen for a second, then it bounces to the memory card screen, again just for a sec. then the red mist. Am I correct in assuming that my laser is going out? One last thing, I have other backups that worked previously that STILL work. Wierd huh? Any help is appreciated.

Try cleaning the laser. It might fix your problem.

I dont think the cd lense cleaner cd is a good idea, they are known to cause damage to the drives sometimes because the brushes are rough and they scratch the surface of the lense, if you have a v1-v11 then you will have to remove the caps on the bottom side of the PS2 to reveal the screws, then take all the screws out, there are some long screws in certain holes make sure you note where you took them out from.
Then after that carefully lift the PS2's casing and take the Eject/Reset button of the top shell, then on top of the dvd drive, there are 2 or 4 screws remove them and lift that cover of the dvd drive, then get a q-tip and put some cleaning solvent on it, alcohol or a window cleaner will be fine, clean in then wipe it dry with the otherside of the q-tip, then close the PS2 and power it up..

Secondly if you are using swap magic and it isnt loading the disk, i would say there is something else wrong, are you sure your swap magic cds are not damaged, if it goes to the mist screen it means swap magic isnt bypassing the protection system for you.

OK. I used the Q-Tip and alcohol to clean the laser and it worked great. But waleedwc makes a good point, if the laser reads the Swap-Magic disk (which it was doing) but not the backup game disk (which it wasn't) then that should indicate that the SM disk is not booting the game correctly, right? But after cleaning the laser it is working fine????? What am I missing here guys? Somebody straighten me out please.

This makes sense but why would it work after cleaning the lense?

Well it could* have been anything, laser could have needed a clean, maybe that was the case, or maybe you were doing something a little bit mistimed, but life is life, and no one knows everything. ;)
