Hi, I've been searching here and the net for a number of hours, without finding a solution, so I hope the solution is so silly I'll kick myself.

I'm currently backing up my DVD collection and sorting my home movies. I've backed up a couple using some Memorex DVD+Rs (4x) without any problems at all.

When I ran out, I bought a spindle of Imation DVD+Rs. I backed up the next DVD using DVD Shrink, and opened Roxio in order to burn to DVD. However, it's not recognising the disc as blank, and wont let me burn to it. When I use a Mr. DVD DVD+RW, it shows it as a blank disc and will let me burn.

It also wont let me burn home movies to the Imation DVD+Rs, but it will let me burn data files.

I took the spindle back, and exchanged it, only to find the same problem. I took this spindle back and bought a spindle of Philips DVD+Rs, and I still have the same problem.

So why does Roxio see ALL of these brand-new DVD+Rs as not blank? I've not had a problem with the hardware or software before.

For reference, I have a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop, with a Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R6252 burner.

Please help!

also Philips media that you said you "exchanged" the prior Memorex/Imation for are JUST AS BAD, if not WORSE~ :) just another thing to consider...

i uninstalled Roxio the day i got my new computer a few years ago, haven't kept up with the Roxio news, so i have no idea what's going on there...but, if it's possible, i would suggest trying Nero; also with a Nero log, my buddy creaky (right above my post) will surely find a problem if the need arises...or i will try my best to take a shot at it as well~ :)

ditch the crappy media, IN MY OPINION, especially the Philips, and get some good stuff...then we can sort and try to find the issue from there~ :)

I agree with both Creaky and Doc.

Here's what you need to do: a) get yourself some high quality media such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (made in japan)<-- these are my top 3 media. b) uninstall Roxio or get Roxio zapper from here http://www.downloadjunction.com/product/store/15199 to completely wipe out Roxio from your system. c) download DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, DVDFab Decrypter from this site (yes... they're all free and very useful - especially for newbies). d) update your Nero to the latest version. e) update your burner's firmware to the latest version. And finally, burn all your dvd projects at no higher than 4X with high quality media as mentioned above.

Hi, thanks for the input.

Creaky, I saw that post when I was searching, and frankly, I haven't had the same problems that everyone else seems to have. It wasn't that the discs weren't readable once I'd burn to them, I just can't burn to them cos they're not being recognised as blank in the first place. There is already a session burned to the disc. I can append data to it, but not burn movies.

I've seen alot of bad stuff here about Memorex and Imation, and hey, you guys have been doing this a lot longer than me, so I'm not going to argue. But I have never had a problemn with the Memorex branded discs I've used in the past, just the Imation and the Philips. I've used Memorex quite a few times to burn dvds of home movies with not a single coaster.

And I've never had any problems with Roxio. I have the full roxio suite, and have used it for some time. I get a lot out of it, and it does what I want it to do. I've also used Nero in the past, and agree it is a good product. However, I'm not yet prepared to completely wipe Roxio from my system.

I'm going to see if I can find the discs you mention, Alkohol. I've heard of Verbatim and Maxell, and I'm sure Verbatim are readily available this side of the water. Not heard of Taiyo Yuden before, I guess I'd have to go somewhere other than PC World to get those!

Once I have them, I'll give it another go and let you guys know if I succeed.

Thanks for your interest!

Jamlaw.

@jamlaw - sometimes ppl such as me have to generalise a little in the advice we give, for instance uninstalling roxio, using CMC media, burning above 4x are 3 things that spring to mind. What ppl like me do is try to get ppl up and working again. a part of that is to drill down as far as we can into the basics of a problem, and rule out all the obvious. With all the best will in the world we can never know enough about a person's setup so it's all about getting the basics right. if a person decides later to use higher burn speeds for instance great, that's all good stuff - it's just important to get working and get working consistently. stuff like roxio is known to be an absolute pain in the backside. again it's best to be drastic and remove the darn thing. this may be less of an issue with newer versions of Roxio but again, sometimes it's less important to worry about too much detail and just get rid of it. The person with the original problems can always reinstall Roxio, for instance. Because the basics have (hopefully) been covered/sorted, the poster would then be able to pinpoint the problem for themselves as they'd been armed with the solutions beforehand.

We only advise stuff that's either easy to do, or not destructive. ie we don't go telling ppl to go reformatting their machines and lose data, we propose sensible and reasonable solutions (sometimes it's overkill but it's all about getting ppl working).

Anyway i'm rambling now but there are always exceptions to the rule so glad you get on ok with Roxio / certain flavours of Memorex. hope that makes sense

Sure Creaky, I understand exactly where you're coming from. I'm going to go buy some better quality media (maybe not from PC World!!), and try it, as, for me, it's the easiest thing to try first.

If it doesn't work, then I'll consider swapping Roxio for Nero.

I'll report back if I have any joy (or not!).

No worries. Seriously though, pc world are robdogs for most things, especially media. Svp is definitely a much cheaper/better alternative.

Ps previously reply wasn't meant just for you, as I'm always aware that other ppl either read thru the threads or end up here from a google search. Ie the replies aren't meant to sound condescending, just catering for anyone that might read 'em.

Keep us posted anyhow

Just curious, but is your firmware up to date? There is an update as of August that you can find here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

Well, I went out and got some different DVD+Rs, and tried again.

Still the same. I could not start the burn process, as it said that the disc is not the right type.

So I downloaded Nero, installed it and gave it a go on Nero. But lo and behold, I couldn't start the burn process as it said I needed a DVD+RW, not a DVD+R, even though it showed the disc as empty.

So tomorrow I'll go get some DVD+RWs. But I don't understand why I cannot burn video to a DVD+R. I thought the only difference is that DVD+R is a 1-time burn, whereas you can erase and record multiple times on a DVD+RW. Am I missing something in my understanding? I can burn to DVD+Rs in my DVD recorder, so why not on my DVD re-writer?

Jamlaw - Confused!

That's where you may need to update your burner's firmware. This firmware is the manufacturers recommendation of all the different media that is out there.Every so often, they add an update so your burner will perform better with this newer media. If your burner doesn't recognize those imations or your last +rs,usually due to the firmware. The +rw's may work, because they have a totally different MID code.

Go with that firmware link that LOCOENG posted. It may take care of this issue.

Download that update and save it in a folder and remember where it goes/close out all programs/leave drive empty/make sure no storms are nearby/open up the update folder and follow the directions to the T and re-boot.It's just like downloading a normal program.

Hmm, I'm not having too much luck.

I downloaded the new firmware, it's version 1.14, and my current is 1.13, but I cant install it. It gives me a badly translated error message:

"It logon by the user who performed, and different user. Please logon by the user who performed this program."

I think I understand the gist of this, but I'm not sure how to get round this. My account is the only admin account on the machine, but it wasn't the first admin account on the machine. The laptop was the last of the line, and a display model, so there was already an admin account present, which I deleted after I added my own.

I would guess that there's something in the registry that could be changed, but not sure. The only other option I see is to restore back to factory settings with the discs.

Any other advice would be gratefully recieved! I can currently burn DVDs to DVD+RWs, which is ok but not ideal!

Thanks :)

@jamlaw,
If you post a Nero burn log, it will point out any issues you are having. Even a failed burn logs stuff in the Nero log. If you are using vers. 6 of Nero, it is in program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.txt. Just be sure to edit out your serial number. Also Nero's info tool does a great job of reporting confilcts. Post it here, and all the experts can pour thru your log.
It does look like a bad media issue going on here from what i can tell. A log clears up ambiguities real fast.

Well, unfortunately, there is no log from when I try to burn onto the DVD+Rs (and DVD-Rs too), as it doesn't accept the disc as a valid one, so the burn process doesn't get as far as starting.

However, when I've tried to burn to DVD+RWs using Nero, it tends to fail whilst finalising. It would be helpful to know why, as I've not managed to successfully burn a disc with Nero! So, here's the log. I'musing Nero 7, downloaded from this site. I can't see anywhere to attach a document to this post, so I'll cut and paste the log, so apologies for this being a long page!

Took me a while to get back, but i am looking at this now. That last log you posted, got corrupted on formatting, and makes it verrrrry hard to look thru..
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1902
this is the firmware for the toshiba drive. I cant see firmware version listed in that. Did you look in program files>ahead>nero>nerohistory.txt ? It will list all your burns, but it also lists more than these recode logs... never mind, i can see what i need is in the jumble at the last there, and you are using Nero 7. Yes you have many problems going on. You need to update your firmware as:
Quote:
Recorder: <TOSHIBA ODD-DVD SD-R6252>Version: 1A11
that says you are 1A11 and 1A14 is the latest.. thats one thing.
next,
Quote:
Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ?=== Scsi-Device-Map ===DiskPeripheral : IC25N060ATMR04-0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: OffCdRomPeripheral : TOSHIBA ODD-DVD SD-R6252 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
see how hard that is to look thru?? anyways, BOTH of your drive DMAs are off, and should be ON. Also if you have an external drive ATAPI detected: ? is ok, but if drives are internal, you should have it saying ATAPI detected: ATAPI
to fix DMAs

ditch the crappy media, IN MY OPINION, especially the Philips, and get some good stuff...then we can sort and try to find the issue from there~ :)

try the firmware update, and good media..

And I've never had any problems with Roxio. I have the full roxio suite, and have used it for some time. I get a lot out of it, and it does what I want it to do. I've also used Nero in the past, and agree it is a good product. However, I'm not yet prepared to completely wipe Roxio from my system
You're having problems with roxio now, you have not removed it from your system according to that burn log..

You will either listen to us, or you wont. If you dont listen, and choose to do what you want, then i am sorry, you will still have problems. MOST ppl have to decide to use either Roxio, or Nero, but not both. Roxio doesnt seem to have a problem with Nero, but Nero has documented problems with Roxio. They are documented here at AD in countless burn logs as many can attest to.
Dont get the idea i am mad, or upset at you. Its just that when i see you post your going to stick with Roxio, and then you try to use Nero, it seems like we are wasting our time here. You can always make a back up copy of Roxio, and try running Nero after the Roxio zapper and fixes suggested (like firmware and media). Then if you want to go back to Roxio, you could re-install it and see if you still have conflicts.

And finally, burn all your dvd projects at no higher than 4X with high quality media as mentioned above.
yeah, what alkohol said.. :)

Hey Maxburn!

Thanks for your time. I have total respect for all the advice given here, as you guys have been doing this a lot longer than I, and I have not discounted any of the advice given here.

I did not know that Nero had problems with Roxio, although the thought did cross my mind when Alkohol suggested the Roxio zapper. I have the discs for Roxio, so I could always install it later if I really wanted!

I had no idea about the DMA. I'll follow the instructions and get it changed.

I have tried to install the latest firmware (1.14), but I get an error message mentioned in my earlier post. I still haven't got round this yet! As I mentioned before, there's nothing obvious to me in the registry, and I'm not sure where else to look, or what else to do.

I'm going to try uninstalling and zapping roxio, and stick with Nero at least until the trial expires. I'm also going to get better media.

I'll let you know what success I have!

Thanks again! :)

Something you can try on the firmware issue, and yes, firmware is very important to fix if you want to keep on burning. Nero reported your version as 1A11 and the latest is 1A14. Because you are so many versions behind, try going to version 12 or 13 first, then if they take, go to the next one. I had to do that on my lite-on drive. Latest vers kept saying the firmware was for my drive only, and would not continue. I went 2 vers back, and got that one to take. Then went straight to the latest vers and it worked. Worth a try. Just follow the firmware's instructions and reboot when told to. Don't do anything else while firmware flash is going on, and double check that you have the right firmware flash. I call it the Progressive firmware flash.. :) Luv the way this site underlines that, but the link is not to my definition of Progressive ..~:)

Thanks Maxburn, that was what it needed!

I did a search in Yahoo for the firmware, and tried to find previous versions. Amongst the searches was this thread from AfterDawn:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/113798

Which contains version 1A13, and one fix listed for this update was that the drive would recognise DVD+R discs where previously it did not. I updated to 1A13, then to 1A14 and it all works lovely now!

PS: I have zapped Roxio, and am currently using Nero! It looks comprehensive, so I might just invest in the full product!

Thanks guys!

Great jamlaw! Glad to see the Progressive method worked for you. That very same kind of problem had me stumped for a while. It took some time, but at least now you are back to the land of burning. Just remember to keep the basics in mind:
Burn at 4x max
Use good media
Don't multi-task while burning/close out other programs
Keep firmware and software updated
Defrag HD frequently
Vist AD regularly

Stick with those, and you shouldn't have any problems making back-ups. If you do, you know where to look for answers, right here :)
Now go out there and burn something.. Fire! Fire! No, i mean burn a movie. Those silly voices in my head, they can be soo funny sometimes..
