After spending many hours reading the different posts about what media to buy I started using the Maxell's, Sony, Fuji, and the Verbatiums. Thus far I have gotten good results with all except that I was a little disappointed to see that the Verbatims were MCC. Sony, they turned out great but I have decided not to buy any more of them until they make good the damage they have caused others with their spyware. I know one person will make little difference to them but I don't support their tactics.

Now for the reason I posted, I read that someone had good results with the Office brand of discs. I saw the ad and went out Monday and took advantage of the buy one get one free special. I use one of them on Tuesday to back up a movie, bad mistake. Not only did it scan out below 50, the player didn't even recognize it. The special went back to the store 30 minutes latter. I thought I would get a lot of static, no, the manger (who used them) stated he had the same results. He works there and he said he wouldn't buy anymore. For now I just stick with the Maxell and the Fuji. Might use up the Verbatiums just to get rid of them. No more Office Depot brand specials for me.

The older 4X Office Depot disks were Ritek G-04, awesome disks, then the 8X disks were upgraded to Ritek G-05's, still good disks, but the latest offerings, the 16X are now Ricoh's, and not quite as good as the previous ones. I suggest using a freeware program called DVD Identifier to figure which generic disks the office supply stores are using.

@falcon

hmm...i really wonder what your setup is like since you stated this:

what is wrong w/ MCC? Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp. IS one of the better manufacturers out there~ :) i would PERSONALLY only put them behind Taiyo Yuden by just a hair...as naturally i am biased towards using and recommending TY media~ :)

but, seriously, i am curious as to what model burner/make you have...i have 6 different burners and not ONE dislikes MCC made Verbatims~ :) they ALL burn just fine with flawless playback, i happen to use MANY of the 8x DVD+R MCC003 Verbs as well as the 16x MCC004 16x DVD+R Verbs too~ i have a few hundred in the DVD-R format, but i no longer use them as i'm a DVD+R kinda guy~

the Office Depot 8x +R SHOULD code out as RitekR03s, even though i've never used them before, i trust my friend's judgement on them as being very decent media (gurnard, saugmon, and catfreak) can ALL attest to them being GOOD media~ :)

there might be some more "tweaking" you need to do with your setup, but, for the most part, i DO support Ritek as a decent manufacturer, i've had 500+ of the 8x RitekG05s DVD-R that were burned 3+ years ago and they still stand the test of time...

you might want to check you firmware on your drive and MAKE SURE it is up to date...often times, FIRMWARE is the culprit in having "bad burns"

good luck

docTY~ :)

Hello, I just thought i would let everyone know my trials so far with office depot media. i backed up a few of my movies the other night to try it out, office depot dvd +r 8x it codes out as ritek ro3 well i watched the same movie all the way thru twice on my stand alone (harmen karden) dvd player just to see if there are any skips or pixelation or anything out of the ordinary , well it came thru like a champ! keep in mind i only backed of a couple of movies so far but so far so good :) they were backed on a nec 3520 with Liggy's and Dee's modified NEC firmware , burned at 4x /unjust p.s. and i think i would see any errors because i watched them on my 65 inch mitsubishi wide screen and saw no diff between the original or the backed copy :)

Akyllonen, I went back and read some more about codes, yes I made an error when I stated MCC was an disappointment. I never stated I got a bad burn, I was thinking about the wrong code. Now I know and will not make that statement again. I got the MCC code mixed up with the CMC one.

Now about my setup, the firmware is up to date (as of tonight) and I went back after the bad burn with the Office Depot stuff and used a Sony and everything went fine. This one had a quality reading of 97, not bad.

Thanks Akyllonen for un-confusing me,
