Some of my backed up discs skip (maybe 10% of them). Some skip near the middle of the disc; others near the end (none near the beginning). I use Decrypter and Shrink exclusively and for media Ty's from supermediastore exclusively. I burn only at 4x and have default disc capacity reduced to either 4200 or 4300 megs (can't remember which). I also inactivate all background programs (adwares and virus softwares) and internet is not active (dial up).

Any suggestions?...thanks

Sounds like you are doing everything right, do they skip each and every time and have you tried the ones that skip in another DVD player.

As gwendolin said sounds like your doing everything right. Make sure the discs are clean when you put them in - each player is different on how picky they can be. I would also blow some canned air and/or a dvd cleaner in the player and drive. Make sure your drive's firmware is up to date also.

Are you using paper labels on your burnt DVDs? - if so these can cause the problems your are experiencing.

Additional info:
Discs skip in the same place each time played, and do it on two different brands of DVD players. They may not skip at exactly the same minutes, seconds elapsed, but pretty close to that. Also, I have used a laser lens cleaner disc in the DVD burner (no help), but haven't tried compressed air yet.

The burner is a Sony DW-U18A (about 1 yr old).

I'll see if I can ID what my firmware is. Where is the website to check latest firmware updates...thanks

Here's a website for firmware updates:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
Decrypter will also give you your latest firware version. Go to tools>drive>check for firmware updates. It will give you a message saying it will take you to the site I listed above then say 'btw your current firmware is ....'

I have had the exact same problem (A backup will skip in the middle--chapter 7 and up-- or towards the end)and not been able to narrow it down. I have tried multiple brands of DVD's. 2 different dvd burners and I still get the occasional disc that will skip. I did notice that the disc seems to skip in cheaper dvd players. My brothers dvd player will not even play my backed up discs. I also have a dvd player on multiple tv's in the house and notice on the kids cheap tv/dvd combo they disc will skip but on my gateway dvd player I have only had problems with 1 disc (coincidently that was this weekend). I have friends that use DVD Shrink and say they have NEVER had any problems.
I have also tried to disc's with no label and that does not seem to help.

I have not checked the firmware update yet, but I will tonight.
If anyone has any ideas please post, I have yet to find a solution (though I admit I have not checked into to that much).........

What different brands of discs have you tried? Make sure you are using quality media like Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. Here's a prog that will give you the manufacturer of the disc:
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
The manufacturer can make all the difference when it comes to playback.
Some dvd players are pickier then others with the different media that they'll play. I have some sony's that will play anything I throw at em - no playback problems. Also some of the older dvd players do not like the +r format.
Also make sure you are not burning at max speed. You may also want to reduce your target size to say 4360 so you don't burn close to the edge.
