understand I have to get anyDVD or dvd shrink to allow me to backup my own DVD's. Will DVD shrink work with with Roxio Easy Media Creator 8? I understand it is easier to use than Nero 7. I have recently learned that any DVD will work with Roxio, but just wondering if dvd shrink (free!) will work as well.

If you want to back up copy protected DVDs then first you have to remove the encryption...most here at Ad use DVD Decrypter which is a free program . Nero cannot remove encryption and I dont know anything about Roxio, if you want to go the DVD Decrypter and burn with Nero then follow this guide. http://www/dvdplusvideo.com

Thanks Gwendolin; still trying to figure out Nero or Roxio for my purposes. No-one seems to have used Roxio Creator 8 but because of the ease in using will take a chance and purchase it. Would be nice to be made of money so you don't have to worry...trying to get as much bang for my buck as I can. Thanks for your reply

There ARE other players in this field you know... Try looking into B's Recorder Gold 8, Software Architects Write DVD Pro, or even NTI's latest series (wish they'd lose that ugly as ass interface, but the program is getting better and they're catching up with features while keeping dics space usage low and simplifying things for ease of use). These may not have what you're looking for, but remember that other options exist and are getting better all the time. Freeware burning suites are just around the corner, mark my words, just a matter of time.... And I bet they find some miraculous way to let you install ONLY what you want, an epiphany which has so far eluded Roxio... There's a German guy who's got a rag tag assembly of free cd/dvd utilities using Linux emulation, his English is horrible but he's damn close to the first GPL burning suite! Search for Easyburning and you should find him.

whilst i like Linux (not too much, give me Solaris any day, or even Windows!) all i've seen burning-wise on Linux so far is k3b and i can't lie and say i'm over-eamoured yet.

If one is looking for an app that'll work with Shrink then you can do no better than VSO's CopyToDVD. After about a week of using CopyToDVD I uninstalled Nero and haven't looked back because it's hands down the leanest, meanest best performing burning app I've ver used. It's been in heavy use now for several months and I've yet to have it throw a bad disc. The icing on the cake is that Shrink is set up to use it to auto burn.

Another phenomenal app to check out would be Prassi ONES. Shrink isn't set up to use it automatically but it's also one hell of a burning app that's never thrown a coaster for me and it's an absolute bargain at $24.

Thanks for asking Gwendolin! Just bought Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 (easy to use!)Supposed to be pretty good for use with my digital camera and camcorder. Have read so many of the posts on the site re. the dvd end of things and have to say I am a bit overwhelmed (wonder if my age has anything to do with it!!!!! Haven't tried anything with dvd's yet. Bought Maxell + dvd's and will use at a lower speed. If that doesn't work will try DVD - Lots of trial and error I guess. ;B

To save yourself $$$$$ then why not purchase a couple of DVD RW that way you can use them over and over. When you have perfected the art just burn them to a +R or -R dVD

.

I can see some tuff times ahead, roxio isnt the best application to use as it requires dominance of your pc and will conflict with most other burning applications that you have installed on your pc.

kind of thought Roxio Easy Media8 wasn't the best way to go for DVDs but being the "el-cheapo" I am, bought it for the easy interface in other applications I plan to use it for. Plan to get AnyDVD and cloneDVD2 to use with it and will follow Scuba Pete's great detailed instructions. He sounds like quite the guy and his site is fantastic! I have a lot of questions but am a little reluctant to ask them at this time in an open forum. Wish I had a geek friend I could just phone or email for help....oh well. In other words I should probably un-install the very basic Sonic Digital Media le that came with my Dell Dimension 9100 and any other programs that are being used for creating cd/dvd's?? before I try EMC8?? ;Bev

This is what the forum is about, for people like yourself to ask questions, everybody here had to start somewhere but by reading others threads and asking questions your skill level rises. Definition of DVD+-R For NEWBIES, exactly what it says, no question is too dumb( well most anyway)if you want to know something then just ask. Cheers

dvd43 will work under ROXIO's Media Creator 8 (MC8) - with that being said, I've noticed a few snags with Roxio 8. If you use Roxio's Home as your starting place in MC8 and try to start a new dvd copy project, even with dvd43 running in the background, it comes back with a message indicating that the disc is copy-protected. NOW, if you skip the Home Page and go straight to the Disc Copier component of the software, DVD43 will work it's magic. So here's the snag - MC8 will not copy from DVD9 to a DVD4 without the middle step of compressing to a file first. What you have to do is select your original dvd as the source, and select a dvd folder as the destination. After it completes, you then have to select that folder as the source and then your blank as the destination. MC8 will compress the file and write to the blank.

MC8 basically saves you an extra step from dvd-decryptor and dvd-shrink in that once shrink is done (assuming you're not using NERO), then you don't have to use a 3rd application to burn to the disc.
