if i use the still image feature to replace something is it going to show the image for as long as the part i'm using it for is or can i make it show the mage for only 2 seconds or something

Yes, if you use a "Still Image" in "Full Disc" mode, it will show as long as the video stream is suppose to run.

In "Re-author" mode, you can set the "Duration" of the clip by using the "Set Start/End Frames" feature of DVD Shrink.
