Hey guys, I'm new here, I found this site while searchin' through Google =)

Ok I am a real newb when it comes to this DVD situation...I am very literate with computers and have used them my whole life, but I have never really bothered with DVD's (mostly because my computer can't play them!) I thought I would come into the scene and just burn burn burn and have millions of backups of all my games and movies...But then I saw things like DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW etc. etc. etc. etc. etc...Okay maybe not so much ;) Basically all I want to be able to do is backup movies, PC games, PS2 games, Xbox games and the like. I do not have any DVD burning equipment. I have made the decision that the DVD-R discs are for me, because I don't think RW will be that neccesary. Is that a wise choice? Also I was looking for DVD burners, and I saw a trillion listings for brands and a whole lot of numbers after like 4XRW 8XR and all that kinda stuff...Could somebody help me out a little here? I know you will probably say "READ THE F*%@ING GUIDES!" but I seriously have and am still having trouble...*hangs head in shame*

So I am simply asking for some help on purchasing the appropriate DVD burner and media for burning my movies, games etc.

Warm regards,
b0xD

@boxD, welcome to AD..no doubt you will receive many replies to your question, burners in my opinion are a thing of choice, you dont need a really fancy one(in my opinion). It seems as soon as you buy one a newer model comes out the following week but good thing is you can always update your firmware. I have a Pioneer DVR109 that does All types of discs incl DL, but its now superceeded. Listen to some of the AfterDawn Adicts, they know their stuff as do Most Senior Members. Good Luck As for Media I think Taiyo will get a good wrap...steer clear of Memorex

Thanks for the welcome guys!

@andmerr, I reckon I will be able to figure out the encoding and software side of things, I have seen a couple of promising guides on this site so I will take a look at them later, but I am having real issues deciding what media and hardware to use. I have heard a lot about Taiyo media so I will check them out when I get a chance. At my local computer store I have only seen imation CD and DVD media available. I just really need help with hardware. Price is not really a problem, but I mean that within reason, I don't wanna go and buy one of those 4000 dollar, 10 DVD burning thingy-ma-jigs...I ain't running a pirating syndicate here ;) I would just like to know what a decent brand is, one that can do the lot and won't crap out on me a few months down the track. I understand theres so many out that it's hard to just say "GET THIS ONE!" but could anyone nudge me in the right direction?

Cheers,
b0xD

I personally have a LG GSA 4163B that is very nice. It does allow bitsetting so that I can booktype my DVD+R media to DVD-Rom Format. Very important to obtain a burner that will allow you to do this regardless of the brand that you end up with. Here is a great thread regarding this issue.

BenQ 1640 is also highly recommended by members as are Plextors.

Media you want to stay away from is Memorex (know here as memosux) made by CMC.

Lots of folks here list their burner in their signature block. Take a look.

9mmruger1: has summed it pretty much, except i would recommend at least 1024 (i gig) of ram, p4 64 bit board 3.2 gig chip.Hardrive maxtor or sata (preffer sata as they are faster) with atleast 160 gig./

You dont neccessarily have to get such a big hard drive but overtime if you require to save your projects it does accumulate pretty quick.
