Out of those, for all 3 of my benqs-but they have to be plus format for me:
1)Genuine taiyo yuden: Yuden000-T02 which are on the japanese ty +8x as well as fuji and sony that are both made in japan.Metal azo dye!
2)Verbatim data life plus/data life 8x and 16x speeds.Genuine Mitsubishi metal azo dye.Verbatim is switching all their media to data life now because of confusion.
3)Japanese sony 1x-8x made in japan: Sony08D1 and Yuden000-T02.The taiwanese sony in same 1x-8x speed are also very good.
4) Ridata are usually by ritek: Very good ritek-g04/g05/and R03 media.Maxell uses them as well as office depot 8x media.
5)Ritek,same as #4
6) Phillips: Don't bother. Lots of cmags.By far the worst quality of all those listed. I rate them with TDK/HP/and MEMOREX.
I haven't tried the ridatas, but riteks are sweet. All those top 5 burn at over 99+% and excellent playback.I'll take any of them, any day of the week!It all depends on what's on sale, and for how much.
The #6 media is where playback issues occur for me.Just not worth it when I can get riteks for 25 cents/yuden000-T02 for 30 cents/ and MCC-003/004 for 35-40 cents each all on sale.

1. Taiyo Yuden, i didn't get my nick name on here for recommending otherwise :) all formats and rated speeds 4x DVD-R TYG01(thousands of flawless burns), 8x DVD-R TYG02(hundreds there), 8x DVD+R YUDEN000T02 (thousands again), 16x DVD-R TYG03(just 100 burned, pretty decent, but i prefer either the 4x or 8x personally)...and finally 16x DVD+R (will be coming out earlier next year, i seriously can't wait for these highly anticipated YUDEN000T03 coded ones~) can you say yummy???
2. Verbatim (pretty much the same quality between my retail Verbatim branded and the few "datalifeplus" that i have purchased in the past, i can't see the difference myself; but others with MORE experience with datalifeplus MIGHT be able to....) i've used a few hundred of the 8x DVD-R MCC02RG20(good consistent burns), 8x DVD+R (my fav. of the bunch actually, over a thousand of these under my belt MCC003 coded, great media~) 16x DVD+R (MCC004 coded, also very good, but only used a few hundred, so my experience is NOT extensive w/ the 16x format) anything produced by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp is just GREAT in my book` :)
3. Ritek Ridata (Ridata is actually the HOUSE brand of "grade A" Riteks...these are "supposedly" to be the best of the batches...but, from the many Riteks i've used in the past, they're all decent quality...i got about 500+ burned successfully in the 8x DVD-R RitekG05 coded ones...haven't used the others yet, but have heard good things (hehehe namely from saugmon who mentioned them right above me, and gurnard and catfreak) :)
4. Fujifilm/Sony 8x DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN = Taiyo Yuden produced media, YUDEN000T02 coded...i won't settle for anything less when purchasing retail stores when on sale~ forget the made in taiwan on THOSE 2 brands (personal opinion of course) :)
5. Maxell 8x dvd-r/8x DVD+R MADE IN JAPAN only; used about 200 of each, once again, back in the days recommendation by saugmon to try out the Maxells...good stuff, had a "few" coasters early on due to MY OWN fault, but once my firmware was updated on my various drives...smooth sailing from there~
6. everything else i didn't mention now belongs in THIS final "crap" last place column : Princo, Memorex, HP, Philips, store branded media with the ONLY exception of Office Depot which are Riteks, "no-name-never-heard-of-before-brands", Fake TY coded media, and WORST OF ALL FOR ME, T-D-mother-f*&^in-K~ (i personally despise TDK's own coded TTG01/TTG02 media, worst crap i've ever used in my life; 4 different burners at the time w/ various burning programs, dozen + coasters w/ updated firmware) :)
there you have it...if you would like me to continue my "spiel" on any of the aforementioned medias, please let me know WHICH ONE/TWO you would like me to elaborate on~ :)
that's MY list...hope that helps you out.

kivory666,
Can you post a PIE/PIF scan of a RITEKG05 disc that you've burned? I just wanted to compare results with mine.

AndreL: What's your dvd-rw's brand name and model#?
Some of the quality can change on some of those brands like maxell between both their formats. That's why looking for Made in Japan is an easy way to find the higher quality media.Their plus format is excellent using hitachi/ritek/and ricohjpn on them.Their taiwanese dash format are turning up some cmags.

Have used well over 1500 Verbatim by now i think, not sure how many of all the types..
1. Verbatim Taiyo Yuden 8x -R (TYG02) - amazing, have used a few 100 of these, have about 1400 still in stock!
2. Verbatim DataLifePlus 8x -R (MCC02RG20) - amazing, have used probably 1000 of these, form India, Singapore & Taiwan. These were top dog until the Verb TY came along :)
3. Verbatim DataLifePlus 8x +R (MCC003) - amazing, have used a few 100 of these
4. Taiyo Yuden 8x -R (TYG02) - excellent though only used 100 of these
5. Ritek 8x -R (RitekG05) - excellent though only used 50 of these
6. Verbatim DataLifePlus 16x +R (MCC004) - excellent though only used 25 of these
7. any other makes - have used various other makes in small & infrequent quantities so not worth mentioning any of these
8. Bulkpaq Orange 8x -R (TYG02) - FAKE and appallingly inconsistent - used about 500 of these and they're foul utter atrocious rubbish. i keep these purely as a homage to bad media

Not have too much experience with burning yet (only about 400) here is my list: All are +R No experience with -R's
1. Taiyo Yudens
2. Maxells (MIJ)
3. Maxells (MIT)
4. Sony (MIJ)
5. Fuji (MIJ)
6. Office Depot (slipped in for Saugmon) :-]
Now that being said, since I have gotten the system of backing up down to an art, they have all worked equally well.

People are entitled to their own choice and preferences, so below is what I prefer and use:
01) genuine Taiyo Yuden
02) Maxell (MIJ) ---> my DRU710A burns them beautifully.
03) Verbatim
And now the rest is history.

Hello , my trials so far with dvd media is all pretty much as Kivory, Creaky , Saugmon and catfreak recommends, what they are all preaching is true!
1. Verbatim dvd +r 8x awesome for me no probs whatsoever!
2. Ty dvd-r 4x got from supermediastore good stuff!
3. Office depot dvd +r's just a few of these, and they work flawlessly!
4. Tdk 8x dvd-r's and compusa 8x dvd +r's store brand media, pure crapola! Horrible , Beastly stuff !!! I had to hold my nec burner over the trash can because it would throw them all up ! It still skips a track if i even mention that media in the same room! shhhhh....
just a side note i burned a few verbatim 16x -r's and had a few bad burns this week . i think i will stay away from those from now on, i'll just use TY -r's from now on./unjust p.s oh yeah i completly stay away from cmc mag this was the first media i ever bought by Khypermedia 25 out of 25 bad burns!
Unjust

For me it's
1. Taiyo Yudens in any speed or format.
2. Verbatims mostly +R
3. Sony
4. Ritek (Office Depot)
5. Maxell
6. Nothing else..
as for CMCs, well, i think i kinda give it away in my sig line. :)
Once i found the good stuff, the cheap crap doesn't even pop up on my radar no matter what the sale price. I would have a hard time taking CMC media even if they gave it away. It does scan good sometimes, burns well many times, but usually lets you down in the end no matter what you do, or how conservative you get. Ya gotta have good dye or everything is wasted. I have used every name brand, and many of the cheap ones before i learned my lesson.
To each his own though. What ever works for you, and can stand the test of time, and playback quality. To me its down to why waste money on something that might be good, when you can buy something you know will be good.
Die CMC Mag!!!
