Transfering VHS to DVD....help a newbie !

I've got about 100 VHS tapes that I want to transfer over to DVD but I haven't a clue on the prodedure. I know I need to buy a Video capture card and related software but thats all I know. Any help you can offer would be most appreciated.

You'll need a video capture card that has composite and/or s-video in. If your video is seriously old and only has ariel in/out and no scart, composite/s-video out you'll need one with a TV tuner as well and you'll have to tune it into your computer the same as on a telly. If your on a PC, adobe premiere is good to capture and edit and if your on a mac, iMovie that ships with OSX can capture and edit too, though only has basic functions.
It's a good idea to get to know the TV system of your own country such as PAL for most of Europe and Aus, SECAM for France, NTSC for the US etc so you can write DVDs in the appropriate format. Capture in the biggest size possible for better end quality thought I don't think it is necessary to go above 720x576 and save captured files in a DV format if possible without compression. You'll also need bucket loads of disk space as the files will be massive. Don't be surprised if 120 mins of video ends up being 20 gb. I've got a 70gb empty disk drive just for video processing and it's still not enough. Also the size of the video file is immaterial it should not exceed 120 mins so it will encode into 4.7 gb of empty DVD using Nero or toast. You can squeeze more minutes onto a 4.7 DVD using programs such as DVD Shrink and DVD2One that compress as well but they'll only do it from existing written DVDs and disk images, basically it's a little more complicated. Anyway I hope I've given some info to start with.

Im new at this ,but using a dvd recorder /vcr combo will or will not work,when converting vhs tapes(own video tapes)to dvd ???????????If the answer is yes ,do I need to worry about encodeing or anything like that. I have about 50 vhs tapes (movies) that I would like to convert to dvd.I apologize if any of this sounds stupid .Just don't know.

I have been hearing about all of this video card thing, but I've no clue how expensive they are, exactly what they do, and where to hook them up! Please Help

forget video capture card. if all you talkin abt is home movies, etc i think your best bet is just to buy a combo vhs to dvd recoder/player like my sansui deck. they not very expensive and are very handy. or you could just buy a recorder/player and connect a vhs vcr to it to playback tape while dvr is rec it.

hey i do this all the time. i have made many dvds from vhs. goto this link for more information. http://www.hp.ca/products/static/dvd/dc5000/index.php
it what i use and u dont need a special graphics card to use it. its an external dvd drive. comes with programs to capture vhs and edit and do what u want with it. i use it all the time, wotks great. mabe a little pricy but my mom got ot cheaper than what it says it is. look around. need any question on how to use it just ask.
btw if anyone does get it or use it i would recomend using a different program to shrink the mpeg because when u record like a hr and a half movie its like 4 gb or so and when u try to burn its too big to fit on the dvd. shrink it and with another program and it it works fine.
