sup guys (and girls), I hope you can help me with my problem:

If I watch movies in WMClassic or any other player once every few minutes the image freezes for a brief moment and then continious a little faster to make up the lost time. Now I've installed, uninstalled and deleted all kinds of codecs/codec-packs but the same problem keeps on coming back (Now I've got the latest K-Lite pack). I've also tried to play it with all other applications closed and blocking out all networktraffic. I've got no problems with DVD Movies by the way. So can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong.

OS: XP SP2, 3GHz, 1GB RAM, 250GB, 256MB X700pro videocard, WinTV PVR500MCE

thanks in advance!

OJB,
Looks like you have enough horse power in your box so that should not be an issue. It still could be something running in the background or the video files itself, or even something as simple as your HD needing to be defragged.
Can you give us a bit more info on the type of files you are having a problem with (Downloaded, Captured, Mpeg, AVI, etc...)?

Sorry to pick your brain but noticed you have a WinTV PVR500MCE capture card and just curious how you like it. Was toying with the idea of going back to a Hauppauge card instead of ATI's AIW X800 as a replacement for my AIW 8500.

they're just normally downloaded .AVI files, DivX and XviD. If I use GSpot it always shows me that there are enough compatible codecs installed

WinTV card is pretty cool, this one got 2 tuners, so you can record 2 different shows at the same time, problem is the software. If not running Windows Media Center, tv-viewing apps are very limited for this card. I'm using Beyond-TV at the moment which seems to work alright

Assuming that there are no problems with the codecs and or files you are downloading for the moment you would need to start looking at your systems performance. What diagnostics have you done thus far?

If it's a system problem one of the items below will hopefully point you to it.
Things to start checking would be:
1)HD fragmentation.

2)Your MSCONFIG file to see what's in the Startup.

3)Monitoring the Performance and Processes tabs in Windows Task Manager while setup to watch one of your files (shutting down the programs you usually do) both at idle and while running one of your files. (Don't forget to look at the Physical and Kernel Memory in the Performance Tab)
Checking the Windows Event Viewer System, Application, and Security tabs to see what if any errors or programs are being logged at the time of a performace hit or when you see a freeze in the video.

4)Windows Virtual memory size and settings.

5)System conflicts.

That's it for starters. Let us know what you find.
Regards

All seems to run ok, no conflicts or what so ever. Even when my CPU Usage is on 70% the files run normally apart from the occasional glitch. It looks like some codecs are interflicting with each other, at least that seems to be the most logic conclusion, but I've already install and uninstalled the whole lot so I don't get it. Are there some codecs related files known to cause trouble?

If the problem is consistant (follows some sort of pattern then it would have to be either a Windows Process or another app trying to run some scheduled task.
Is there any pattern to it?
Have you updated you definitions and run a scanned rescently?
Have you checked for any Spyware?
Do you have InCd installed on your PC?
Real Player?

If nothing like that is going on then the next thing I might try would be to remove all the codecs and players and try installing one codec pack and one player at a time, unstalling the player if the same problem exsists and moving to the next one.
A bit much to do but the only way to eliminate or confirm a bad set of codecs or a problem with one of the players.

Been so long I forgot about this but if your using FFDShow and depending on which version you have there is one setting that could be causing your grief.
Under the Video settings in FFDShow (when you have a file playing) make see if postprocessing is checked. If so disable it. If that clears up your problem then check if you have the latest FFDshow. In one of the earlier versions I had a problem like yours. Taking off Postprocessing would resovle the hangs.
Let us know.

And when I'm playing games, those short films are really bad. Every 5 seconds the image freezes up!

????
Could you clarify this a little better
Are you talking about the cut sequences in a game?

If you are, make sure your video and audio drivers are up to date or try downloading a freah set, remove the current drivers and reinstall the new ones as per manufacturer instructions.

Did anything I had in my last post pan out?

I'm talking about in-game video scenes, mostly at beginning or ending of a level.

Nothing helped so far, I guess I'm going to uninstall everything once more.
