I made a backup of Madden 2006 originally using maxell 8x dvd-rs, and burning at 4x. It played fine for a couple days then yesterday it froze twice towards the end of the game. I decided to reburn the image at a slower speed, i picked 1x but it burned closer to 2x. I went to play it today and its choppy with lag in the menu and game.

I read that the game just freezes occasionally as a bug, but anyone know why the slower burn plays worse than the 4x? Also has anyone else had problems with Madden 06?

Mine playes fine but i have heard of games that will play choppy if you burn to slow it has to do with the data when it is being read. There is no problem with it (the game) though, i would suggest using better media turning off all background programs including internet when you burn and keep it at 4x. And make sure theres no scratches on the disk.

EA games seem to be a pain. I had to burn NHL 2006 to Verbatim DVD-R's to get it to work. NBA Live 2006 I had to rebuild to get to work right. I rebuilt it and burned at 2x, also using Maxell 8x DVD-R's. It seems there's crappy rips of EA games all over the net. That or it's just the size and code.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949

Thanks, i think you may be right Dfram....

I just burned another EA game (007 From Russia with Love) at 2x and the same thing happpend. It played ok for a short while then got extremely choppy. I listened to the ps2 and you could hear it keep trying to read the disc over and over. I don't think its the media, I have other games on maxell 8x's that are fine.

What would happen if I burned at 8x on the 8x disc?

Slower burns (particularly at the slowest speeds) are not necessarily better -- that is something of a myth. For instance, I had significantly better burns at 4x instead of 2.4x with most media, and with my batch of Ritek R04 16x DVD+Rs, I can only burn at 8x -- nothing slower (bad results) or faster (because my hard drive can't keep up, causing the buffer to run out) will do.

More than anything else, what matters is the best speed for your particular burner and a certain media. Unfortunately, this requires a bit of trial-and-error. I'd suggest using Nero CDSpeed from www.cdspeed2000.com (run a disc quality test and a benchmark test) to determine what sort of burns you're getting. Below 280 PIEs and less than 32 PIFs (at ECC 8) are considered acceptable to readers, and the data transfer curve in the benchmark test should be smooth upward, without sharp dips.

EA sports games in general tend to be somewhat picky regarding burn quality -- I think part of it has to do with how it is streaming music and EA Trax all the time, so the PS2 DVD-ROM has to read at max speed (4x) all the time without much margin for speed variation or error. If you continue to have bad results, you can try this little trick if you have Alcohol 120%: Go to Options -> General -> Data Type Setting: Disc Type: PlayStation2, check Data Precision Measurement and set it to High. Then make a copy of your bad disc and reburn. Sometimes this helps out (resolved issues with bad backups of Madden and LOTR: The Third Age).
