You may have issues playing backups to begin with. The v.1-3 PS2's don't load backups well at all, so you may not be able to play them. Make sure you have a v.1:
23. Q. What version is my PS2?
A. http://mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_ps2_main.htm
Other than that make sure your disk and laser aren't dirty or scratched.

I got it to load after a little bit of tape and ingenuity. But now I have a problem with my ps2 reading my back ups. I backed up Madden 2006 to a Memorex DVD-R (I didn't expect it to work) well it loaded the first time and got to the splash screen of Madden and just froze there. I got alot farther than I thought I would. Well I went out and bought some Maxell Dvd-Rs and retried it. It said invalid ps2 disc. I rebuilt it and tried it again but to no avail. I tried backing up another game but that still wouldn't load on the Maxells. I have an an AOPEN 1608/arr dvd writer. I updated my firmware to 1.08. So does anyone have an explanation to why my ps2 will read cheap Memorexs by not Maxells. Thank You

Well like I said I'm not sure you will be able to play backups much at all. The PS2 v.1-3 simply doesn't handle backups well. Most mod sites won't even touch em for that reason. Hell a lot of mod sites won't even work on v.4's, which I have. I'm not really sure there's a lot you can do, except get a newer model PS2. You can try burnings correctly:

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter. Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, etc.

I used the memorexs as a test to see if it would work. I just can't figure out why my ps2 will read the memorexs but not the maxells.

I hope I'm wrong, but my mod guy said there isn't much you can do with the earlier PS2's reading backups. I wouldn't call getting the game to load, then freezing a success. I hope I'm wrong. Your best is try a better brand of media and burn using the procedure I listed. I use Maxell DVD-R's and NHL 2006 wouldn't boot or would skip horribly. I burned it to a Verbatim DVD-R and it works fine. I rebuilt NBA 2006 and burned it to Maxell DVD-R, and it works fine. Try different media, burn speeds, and burning software, that's all you can do. Even then it may not be enough since you have a v.1. Check that link and make sure it's a v.1.

It is definetly a version 1. I tried ncaa march madness 2006 on a memorex disc and it loaded and played but was very choppy. If anybody knows a game that works on a Maxell DVD-R that would be great. Also I always burn at 4x because I have an 8x dvd writer. Is there any options I could select to help me with a more succesful burn. Im going to make this work one way or the other.

I just said I used Maxell DVD-R's. They all work fine. If you want to rebuild use Nero and IsoBuster:
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515
