I just made a back up copy of Dances with Wolves.
Should the back up copy be every bit as good as the original in respects to picture quality , assuming I could get the movie on a disc with out having to shrink it to fit?
I used DVD shrink and selected re-author ,then chose main title.
When I watched the copy I discovered the parts of the movie where the indians were talking did not show the sub titles, like the original did, so I am now doing it over and copying the entire disc. This was not a rental so there's very little on it other then the movie. Im not sure though if the copy looked as good as the original.I have a HD TV which tends to make the lack of picture quality more noticeable.
Thanks.

If quality is what you are after then you can buy a DL disc and make a 1:1 copy with almost no noticable loss of quality. There will always be some quality lost when backing up, but how much you notice is according to your equipment. Just curious what was the compression with the Main Movie only? The subtitles actually don't take up a whole lot of space, so you may get by with leaving them and just getting rid of the extra audio.

I don't know what the compression of the main movie was right now. I'll try to find out latter.
What is a DL disc? Does DL mean double layer? Do they require special equippment or soft ware? What do they cost? Seems interesting.
Thanks.

Yes DL means dual layer, they are 8.7 gigs so they won't require any compression giving you store bought quality. They only 'equipment' they need is a burner that is capable of writing DL so you have to check you burner to see of it's capable. They cost about $2(US) dollars a disc

Thanks GlueEater. Good to know. You've got me thinking.
My burner info is HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC4521B I would guess I need something other then that.

Would I still be able to use DVD dycripter and shink?
Thanks.

All you need is DVD Decrypter in ISO->Read/Write mode. Burn from the MDS file as this is where the layer break info is stored.
