Hey guys, I'm new here and I'm not even close to be a DVD guru...

I bought some Verbatim and Imation dvds -R that claim to have a 4.7gb capacity, that's 4812.8mb.
Why does Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.16 won't allow me to record more than 4500mb? Actually, in the expert settings it allows me to add up to 4600mb, why not 4800mb??

Thanks a lot in advance!

Realistically the capacity is only 4/35GB or so .. I wouldn't put more than 4.35 on a disc, just to avoid playback problems ..

Why do they say 4.7gb, then?

Can I sue Verbatim or Imation for false advertising and get rich?

Not for that ... But you might want to sue Imation for impersonating good DVD media with their inferior crap ...

Anyways MatuX, here is the technical reason (and reason why a lawsuit is impractical) that 4.7GB of PC memory is approx equal to 4.35GB of DVD space

?1,000,000,000 bytes or 109 bytes is the decimal definition used in telecommunications (such as network speeds) and some computer storage manufacturers (such as hard disks flash drives and DVD size). This usage is compatible with SI.
?1,073,741,824 bytes, equal to 10243, or 230 bytes. This is the definition used for computer memory sizes, and most often used in computer engineering, computer science, and most aspects of computer operating systems. The IEC recommends that this unit should instead be called a gibibyte (abbreviated GiB), as it conflicts with SI units used for bus speeds and the like.

Hopefully this will shed some light on a subject that most people just simply take for granted and accept ...

Oh, and yes, I'm not kidding about Imation .. I would not put anything I value or want to access in several years on that media ... However, the Verbatim stuff is top notch!

 ? Victor ?

(edited to insert the word 'not' in my comments about Imation)

I miss the days were 1 megabyte were just 1024 bytes...

Thanks Victor, appreciated.
