HDLoader - is the Independance exploit = HD patch?

I have been looking around this site and some compatibility sites for my HD Loader. I found this tutorial:

I was wondering if this is the patch for HD Loader, that I found on the compatibilitiy charts at: http://list.ps2hd.com/

If I run the tutorial above, is this the CD that I need? http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=elfs (HD Loader fully patched version)?

Also, I see you can install the Independance update via network / ftp, or via the CD. Which is better? Will this permanently use memory on my memory card?
