Heres a link to some free software that will convert/encode your AVI file to that of the dvd movie format or mpeg2 which ever suits your fancy

YOUR AVI file is in its rawest form and as such your dvd player cant read it like this unless you have a DivX dvd player that will play such files. So to get around this nearly all standard standalone dvd players require you to convert your files (ones that you have downloaded ) to that of mpeg2 (which is the format required to burn to dvd so that you can play them and watch them on a tv)
