I just picked up some Ridata DL disks and I am having trouble. I have used the Verbatim DL many times with great results (Using Decrypter to Iso Read and ISO Write). However when I tried uaing the RiData DL - I keep getting errors. I tried using Nero to burn and also had problems. Here is the log file, can anyone help me out?

not too bad of a Nero log, but i suggest you use DVD Decrypter to burn as Nero was giving me problems at the layer break on DL media~ :)

the only other thing you need to do is possibly upgrade your Nero to the latest version (not a big deal, but latest version is 6.6.0.18 now? i use 6.6.0.16, but there is a newer version~ :) )

you need to turn your DMA ON ...

i've had very good success w/ the Ritek DLs, just need to use DVD Decrypter ISO READ---ISO WRITE~ :)

good luck

Your Nero is really out of date. Nero 6 is up to 6.6.0.18.

Check your firmware at this site:

http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

and update as necessary. I think you have the 1620A and if so your firmware seems out of date as well. There are instructions for IDing your burner there.

I don't see the DMA on for your burner but that could be a problem with the Nero log as well.

I think your drive is likely a BenQ 1620 rebadged as an IO Magic. If so it should be flashable with the latest BenQ firmware G7V9 located here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1905

There is always a risk in flashing and no guarantees, although without flashing new firmware, burners obsolete pretty quickly. It's imperative to have the newest firmware with the newer DL media. The Newest Ridata +R DL seems to be RICOHJPN D00 rather than RITEK D01 which you have. I've burned the RITEK D01 without problems as well but with new firmware.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

If backing up a double layer disk it's best imho to use DVD Decrypter in ISO Read mode to rip an image file and then to burn the ripped image file in ISO Write mode. This keeps the layer breaks the same as the original. I have a feeling updating both firmware and software will solve your problems. Always booktype as DVD-ROM for compatability with standalone players.

@SoxPatFan

In addition to all the good advice above, you may want to try burning in ISO mode with ImgBurn, the successor to the final version of DVD Decrypter. According to what the developer, LightningUK, says at imgburn.com, it determines the layer break better than Decrypter did.

Too bad about Theo ;-)

Thanks everyone for the advice, I will make some changes today and give it shot again. When you say the DMA is off, I am not clear as to what that is, or how I turn it on.

I will also try updating my burners firmware. I think it is a rebadged Benq. How can I check to make certain?

The firmware flasher likely won't work if it doesn't ID a BenQ. Note your drive would not be a BenQ retail burner but a "bulk" drive.

In kivory666's post there is a link to a site that shows you how to check the DMA and how to fix it.

Thanks again Laddyboy and Doc TY for you help. I updated the firmware on my drive (I think again from looking at the i/o magic link you sent me Laddyboy, that my drive is a rebadged BenQ 1620A. The firmware I had was G7C9, and the latest that I updated to is G7Z9, so that made a big difference. Infact, that is all I need to do, in order to use the RiData DL's. After updating the burner, I was able to use DVD Decrypter as I was with the Verb DL's. Thanks again for you help
