Circuitcity.com has 25packs of Sony HQ 8x DVD+R media for $8.99...gonna try
I have had this Sony DvDirect DRV-VC10 external burner for about 7 months now, and love...I also Hate it. For those that don;t know its meant to connect to a VCR, Camcorder etc, and directly format them into Mpeg-2, chaptered...ready to go, nothing can be simpler. On the other hand it stinks when connected to a PC.....but thats not why I'm here today.
I'm a huge DoctorWho fan and own about 140 VHS videos, that I'm transferring to DVD. The Sony will only burn DVD+R/RW/DL in stand alone mode, and this is where I'm running into issues. It came with 50 Intenso 1-4x DVD+R disks...which were great, but they are hard to find. I have tried other brands from 8x to 16x, to DL formats...and the burn fails about 40% of the time. As a Stand alone, the burn time is not an issue so 16x media is a waste of money.
Can anyone tell me where to find High Quality DVD+R media in 1-4x? I see that Imation makes a specially coated DVD to prevent scratches but costs about $1 each. I just want the best bang for the buck! I have had issues with Memorex brand the most. Does anyone know where to buy Intenso DVD's? They are marked as an HQ Grade "A" product, but I'm not sure what, if anything that means these days.
Since I primarily use this in Stand alone mode, and cant control the burn speed....the lower the burn rating ie. 1x-4x the better results I get. Basically how it works, is that it records the DVD as the VHS plays(recording as you watch the VHS), then at the end, Finalizes and chapters it in 5, 10 or 15 min increments. This I love...can't be any simpler...and the results are steller, especially when used with a Sima CT-2 enhancer.
I think I may try those Imation with scratch guard at 1x-8x...but if anyone knows where to get HQ DVD+R 1x-4x...please let me know. There are no firmware upgrades for this model...the VC20 has firewire that is only difference, other than being a newer model.
