i have a couple of topic roamin around and i was looking where to post this one i think it falls under authoring. Here's my thing:
I have an mpg file that i would like edit in a few ways:
1- I would like to strip all the audio from it first. Which program is easiest?
2- I would like to add letters during a few a frames. By that i mean at say minute 2 for example, i want the letter S-A-M to appear on the screen one after the other. Which program do i use for that?
3- Then i wanna include my own audio. I would use dvdlab on this i guess cause im aquainted with it a bit.
4- I wanna add credits at the end. if not in a down-sliding fashion, then i guess frames following each other will do (hopefully with a fadout)? WHich program for that?

I am not sure of the limitations of the trial, but Sony Vegas can so everything you aer asking for.
It can strip audio by rendering video only, create different sound formats (5.1 AC3, 2.0 AC3, wave, mp2, mp3, wma, ape, etc...). Also you can add text anywhere on the video for any length you want. You can also have it slide, fade, appear, whatever. And finally, it has different effects for credit rolls like; scrolling, wiping, etc...
I am pretty sure the demo will only keep you from making .mp3 files.
Now if you want, you can also do some of this in DVDlab. You can create text, by simply creating your own subtitle stream and having it set to forced. You can also create some blank menus and add text and make those into your credits. Also, look at the various items in the object browser. There may be an effect got the credits. Now, if it can handle you mpg file, it should also be able to strip the audio if you choose to Demux it.
If DVDlab will not Demux, download a trial of TMPGEnc. This will be fully working for 14 days. Import your video then set it up for making a DVD. This is more complicated as there are some settings to fiddle around with.
Basically, you want to output to elementary streams. This will separate audio and Video (giving you .m2v & .wav or .mp2). Then for bitrate, if the video is short (a few minutes), use constant bitrate at high kbps like 8000. If the clip is long you will have to use a bitrate calculator or use this equation to figure out what to use:
