I've noticed recently alot of the dvd movies I've backed up and burned are kind of "flickering" during playback. My store bought regular unburned dvd's still play fine. Does anyone know if's the dvd player, the burner or the discs? I have a Philips burner inside my year old Dell 8400, a JVC XV-NP10 dvd player and I am using Fuji DVD+r discs to burn too that are made in Taiwan. Any help would be apprecited. I 'm happy with the burns but it gets annoying with the slight flickering during playback just don't really know if it's the discs or the way the player is reading them during playback. Thanks in advance for the help.
my GUESS would be the discs...the Fuji 8x DVD+R made in taiwan are not NEARLY as good as the Fuji 8x DVD+R made in japan, which are the Taiyo Yuden produced ones...
Fuji 8x DVD+R MIJ (made in Japan)= YUDEN000T02 coded Taiyo Yudens (in my opinion, one of the VERY BEST 8x DVD+R media in the market right now)
Fuji 8x DVD+R MIT (made in Taiwan)= RITEK...R03 by Ritek (which are good quality discs, but, i PERSONALLY feel the TYs (Taiyo Yudens) are better)
or = RICOHJPNR02 (also made in taiwan by Ricoh, these are "average" discs on MY setup, lot of people have had good success with them, but ON MY SETUP, i don't see anything special about them at all...would def. recommend the TYs over these)
also, what speed are you burning onto your Fuji MIT discs at? i would suggest lowering it to 4x, less prone to errors that way if you take it slow...also, i don't personally use Philips (anything, media, drives, tvs, anything by Philips is not worth it IN MY BOOK) LOL~ but, you should see if your firmware is up to date on your particular make and model~ :) and also see if it is possible to "booktype" your DVD+R media to the universal compatible format of dvd-rom~ :) this MIGHT help your situation...

Hi and thanks for you input. I can't find the DVD+R or -R's of Fuji made in Japan anymore. Every place in my part of town that carries the Fuji are MIT. I agree the Japan ones are better, but the local Best Buy's around stop carrying those. Now it the made in Taiwan. I burn only at 4x and the philips burner firmware hase been upgraded two times and is the latest. I've burned over 1400 DVD+R discs in more in slightly over a year and it performs well with Nero. Your the second person to tell me about booktyping, but I still don't understand what the concept is, or how to do it. If you could, please explain what it is and what is to be gained from it in further detail or link me to a site that can i would gladly appreciate it.

booktyping your DVD+R media to the most universally compatible format of dvd-rom is what all this talk about "bitsetting/booktyping" is about~ :) not ALL burners are capable of this, however, MANY are using "booktyping utilities" (ie. Benq, Liteon, Plextor) all have their own utilities from their websites to accomplish this...
the main "goal" of booktyping is to make your DVD+R media the MOST compatible with your stand alone dvd players...while most of the newer players out there today will play the DVD+R format, some will not...but, when booktyped to dvd-rom format (which is what the hollywood movies when purchased in stores are, dvd-rom format), compatibility is greatly increased in being able to play your burned discs in your stand alones~ :)
i am not familiar with philips drives in general, as mentioned in my above post, i just don't like the quality of their products, personal preference of course~ :) so i am not completely sure YOUR drive is "booktype capable"...
have a look around in the dvd drives forum or do a search for your model Philips and see if anyone else has your same drive, they will know more about it than i will ever know~ :)
