Hello all.
I am a newbie and am trying for the first time to burn with my dual layer DVD player (NEC DVD RW ND 2510A). Knowing I was up against a challenge, I?ve been researching ripping/burning methods for quite some time using this forum. However, I have come up against a challenge that I have no idea how to resolve, and I?m turning to you for some help. Listed below is a detailed/lengthy description of my situation. Forgive the length, but I figured it can?t hurt.

I live in seattle and have come across a movie that is not available in NTSC format, but am eager to watch. I figured re-formatting the dvd to my hard drive and later burning it to a DVD in NTSC would take some time, but worth the effort.

I first downloaded DVD Decrypter (as it was suggested to be the best way of getting the data of the DVD). I suppose DVD shrink could do it, but I?m using a dual layer DVD, and have no need to shrink the data to fit. I then inserted the movie into the DVD drive, only to be prompted to a window notifying the DVD was of PAL format. The window continued to explain I was to have 5 opportunities to change the DVD zone, but once the 5 opportunities we?re used, the drive was forever to stay the same, in whatever zone was used last. Below this brief disclaimer, was a list of all the DVD zones around the world, all but grayed out besides Zone 2 (the zone of the movie I was intending to rip). The window gave me no choice to change the zone, and one button towards the bottom reading ?OK?. Having no other choice, I clicked it and the window closed. Up popped the DVD Decrypter window and I clicked the large button displaying an image of a DVD to a hard drive.

The data was then ripped off the disk to a file on my desktop. Because this file was ripped as PAL formatted data, I downloaded VOB Blanker to re-format the files. Opening up this file, I selected the newly ripped files from DVD decrypter, and they plopped right down into the lower spreadsheet. Here I right-clicked every file, selected the attributes option, changed the zoning code from PAL to NTSC and then selected the PROCESS!! button towards the bottom of the window. Taking a mere 5 minutes, it then reformatted all the PAL files into NTCS files into another folder on my desktop.

Now with the new files in NTCS format, I then downloaded DVD Shrink. I then selected the ?OPEN FILES button on the top, selected the newly formatted NTCS files, and DVD Shrink then processed the info into its own window. Before selecting this button, I went through a menu of options, one of which allowed me to select the ?FREE ZONE? or all DVD zone format (meaning any DVD player no matter where in the world would be able to play it). This took about 4 minutes. I now saw the DVD broken up into three components; Menu, Movie and Extras. I previewed the movie in DVD shrink to make sure all the audio and video was intact (it was perfect, just like the blogs said they would be). I then selected the ?BACKUP? button towards the top of the window, and went through the process of preparing a new DVD to be burned. I indicated the files were to be backed up onto a blank disk and off my driver went. The burner took an extra long time to burn (1h15min) because I chose the movie to burn on the 2.4 speed because a blog mentioned it would be less likely the DVD would be faulty/choppy.

With it all finished, I then took it out of my drive, headed downstairs hoping to watch a wonderful movie while making some cookies. NOT THE CASE. The DVD player told me ?The play of this disk was prohibited.? I then went up stairs to my computer and tried to play the DVD in my computer. It told me this ?Due to patent license restrictions, MPEG-2 encoding/decoding/playback is not available.? This I though impossible considering in the beginning of this whole ordeal the computer had identified the drive as a zone 2 PAL zone (mentioned at the beginning of this blog). A bit confused, I then ran down stairs and grabbed the Italian Job DVD (zone 1) and put that into my computer DVD drive. I get the same response. Now I?m completely lost.

The DVD I burnt does not play on my house DVD player, or my computer.
My computer doesn?t seem to play Zone 1 DVD?s anymore.
My drive seems to be a zone 2 (PAL) DVD burner (not by my choice, and I?m sure a few hours ago it was a zone 1) and I can only change its identity 4 more times. This was further proven when I used DRIVER INFO V2.2 to identify my drive type and properties.
I?ve read about some firmware you can download for your DVD drive, but that?s incredibly dangerous and you must know your computer like a best friend. Even though I don?t, I still researched the idea only to find out my DVD drive does not have a firmware patch available. These patches apparently lift any Zoning restrictions from your drive.
So what are my options? What did I do wrong? I followed all the blog forums and info pages regarding this issue and everyone seems to come out a winner. I am no winner.
Please help!

Firstly edit out your serial number e.g. 1A20-022K-0000 etc. - others can use it.

Secondly your appear to be trying to copy on the fly - not recommended for reliable burning

Copy options: copy on-the-fly: ON
read ISRC/MCN: OFF

Thirdly - you appear to have a CD in you drive - not a DVD

Fourthly - you have INCD installed - this is packet writing software that does not play well with other programs - would suggest uninstalling using Nero Clean Tools.

These are some of your basic problems - others may offer more detailed advice.

This is odd as the session has been closed.

Your Nero is a little outdated - would suggest downloading a later version - may handle dual layer better.

Also Imation are considered to be of marginal quality - would try better media such as Verbatim, TYs etc.

Your process is extremely complicated and I think you have chosen some bad options along the way.

I cannot help any further - perhaps others may

Hello Triznoss,

A little off topic but, when dealing with Dual Layer media, I always suggest using the latest software and the latest firmware on your burner.
Quote:
Recorder: <_NEC DVD_RW ND-2510A> Version: 2.04 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.3.0.4
Latest Nero 6 is v6.6.0.18
Latest firmware for your drive is v2.18
Your a little outdated :)

http://support.necsam.com/optical/downloads/flashfirmware/fw/K251...

Might help in the future, if you buy other brand of Dual Layer media.

As for the NTSC to PAL (Vice Versa) conversion, VSO DivxToDVD future release will/should have a pull down menu, that will let you do just that. Take a PAL DVD and convert it to NTSC.

I personally can't wait to see this in the future...

My 2 cents...

Hi folks, this message is about the "PAL DVD to Hard Drive to VOB Blanker with PAL to NTSC conversion to Nero to NTSC DVD-R" (PAL to NTSC) method, henceforward referred to simply as "the method"

I'm fearing that the method that one finds written about endlessly in these PAL to NTSC discussions is insufficient to create a genuine conversion that will be processed by all DVD players.

Anecdotal evidence:

1. If one has a high-end DVD player that converts PAL/NTSC on the fly internally, as I do, a disk made using this method looks AWESOME! It looks AWESOME for one reason only - the DVD player MAKES it LOOK AWESOME! The 'VOB Blanker' conversion process did nothing. Perhaps, at best, the ripping from the orignal disk removed region codes which would later have caused the DVD player to halt for that reason.

2. If one has a budget-brand DVD player, as my grandparents do, a disk made using the VOB Blanker method PLAYS, but the image is shuffled across the screen in fits and starts as the video processor unit of the DVD player attempts to figure out where the missing 4.9375796 <sic> frames per second are.

3. If one has a middle-of-the road DVD player, as my girlfriend does, the player reads the disk, realizes the frames are amiss and stops before ever displaying a single image.

With a single disk created using "the method," I experienced all these of these results.

I honestly beleive the people who are describing the incredible results of this procedure are playing their output on high-end DVD players which automatically compensate for the PAL to NTSC conversion on their own, independent of any adjustments made by VOB Blanker.

I think "the method" is obviously flawed. Heres some math, someone call me on this where I'm wrong:

A genuine conversion needs to take into account that 25 frames per second (1 frame = 0.04 seconds) played at 30 frames per second (1 frame = ~0.033333 seconds) leaves you with ~0.166666 seconds per second of 'empty' playback left over per second. If this time isn't filled with SOMETHING ELSE, obviously its filled with blank space or, more likely, the succeeding frames. If the first 25 frames are used up and the next 25 begin, to fill the 5 frame surplus of the 30 frame system, the VIDEO, when viewed in reat-time, will move much faster than was originally intended. Now, this isn't such a problem until one conisders their audio. Audio systems between PAL and NTSC are indentical - all playing at 48000kHz. Thus, the AUDIO provides a static reference point as the NTSC-converted-PAL video streams ahead, ultimately leading to a dramatic lag betwen the action on screen and the audio that was intended to accompany it.

TO COMPENSATE for this, the AUDIO must be re-sampled with a consideration for the time loss necessitated by the accelerated video. And this is where the VOB Blanker method fails - VOB Blanker does nothing to compensate either for the composition of 25 frames in the space of 30 OR the audio which is to accompany accelerated 25fps video which has been forced into 30fps.

In order for this process to work, properly, i.e. for all disks to be playable on all DVD players, using only a desktop PC for conversion, the VIDEO must be enhanced by adding (through digital emulation) the missing 5 frames per seconds (very complicated!), or the AUDIO must be condenced in accordance with the time deficit created by forcing 25 frames into 30.

Anyone got a program that does THAT?

boothead,

thanks for a thorough explanation of the issues with NTSC<->PAL conversions. I am trying to accomplish this task, too. So far, I have found two programs - Avi2DVD (freeware) and VSO DivXtoDVD (earlier version - freeware; current version - trialware) that can do the recoding. You can find these with Google or by searching this site.

I am still having problems with the some of the input PAL video streams not being recognized at their proper resolution of 720x576 (they play normally but Avi2DVD and DivXtoDVD "think" they are 352x576). As a result, the input PAL and the output NTSC video streams are "squished" horizontally in about half. But this is either a problem with the disks themselves, or with the way I ripped them using DVDShrink and/or DVDDecryptor.

Hi Zap,

Have you tried your output from DivXtoDVD and avi2dvd on a variety of DVD players? Did it work? My experience with these solutions is you wind up with a compromised image with no menus and plenty of DVD player compatability issues. I don't beleive either of these is actually converting the video from PAL to NTSC, i.e. 25fps @ PAL resolution to 30fps @ NTSC resolution. I think they are just changing the video tags.

For now, I am focusing on just trying to adjust the tags - but correctly! using PGCedit after VOBBlanker to correct the loose ends left by VOBBlanker. VOBBlanker, by it's own admission, can't do the job right. I barely understand what I'm doing but will provide a better explanation if asked.

Hello boothead,

for some reason, both DivXtoDVD and Avi2DVD "see" input PAL streams at the wrong resolution, so playback of the converted output even on the computer is "squished" horizontally. Since both of these programs have this issue, I am assuming the problem is either with the original disks, or with the way I rip them using DVDDecryptor or DVDShrink.

I did manage to convert a couple of PAL movies using DivXtoDVD to NTSC, they play great on my Panasonic F-65. I noticed that these originally had the 4:3 aspect ratio as shown by IFOEdit; the PAL movies that are having the problem have 16:9.

Finally, I think at least Avi2DVD does the recoding, not just changing of tags, and I believe DivXtoDVD does as well. I can be wrong on this. Thanks for you suggestions...

Hey Zap,

I have almost no experience with avi2dvd. But with DivXtoDVD, the original freeware version anyway, you have the option of encodeing 4:3 or 16:9 - you are selecting appropriately, correct?

When a disk is ripped, the ripper just picks up the data off the disk and lays it on the drive - perhpas removing encryption, etc., but making no other changes. So I don't think the ripping process is causing your problem. I think it enters on the re-coding.

Now! I think DivXtoDVD does re-code, but just now I took a close look at the output from a previous DivXtoDVD conversion experiement, and unless I'm wrong, the output is still PAL 25 fps, even after running it thorugh DivXtoDVD in NTSC mode.

I think the <VOB Blanker -> PCGedit -> DVDShrink -> Disk Burn> method works best of all I've tried. The menus must be removed after using VOBBlanker (the purpose the DVDShrink step, as well as to compress if necessary), but VOBBlanker also doesn't seem to completely reconcile the formating tags when making the PAL/NTSC switch. PGCedit fixes this... or seems to. More experimenting and then maybe a pseudo-guide? Anyone interested or is this topic dead? I've done what I needed to do so I have no further interest unless it's educational for others.

Yes!
I have yet to fix my problem, and looking for some pointers.
I've updated my firmware, and still no promising results.

Now what do you mean the "menus must be removed after using VOBBlanker (the purpose the DVDShrink step, as well as to compress if necessary), but VOBBlanker also doesn't seem to completely reconcile the formating tags when making the PAL/NTSC switch."
When I ripped the DVD onto my HD, I then used VOBBlanker to re-format. Afterwards, I watched the movie through DVD Shrink and it played fine. I would assume since it played in DVDshrink it would play on a disk too. Am I wrong in this one?

Keep the info coming!

The way I got an NTSC DVD converted to PAL was a follows:

First ripped the NTSC DVD to HDD using AnyDVD and Decrypter.

Then ran this through Nero Recode and upped the max size of output to DVD-5 for the AVI Mpeg-4 file (as Nero defaults to 700MB).

Then ran this Mpeg file through Nero Vision Express to make a DVD with the option set to PAL.

There is a slight drop in video quality but only compared to original DVD-9 disc and it then plays on all PAL only DVD players.

I've been entirely unsucessful in converting disks that INCLUDE menus AND work in 100% of TV-Top DVD players. I think at best, you can satisfy yourself by using only the actual video you wish converted, and then subjecting it to VOBBlanker to change the attribute to the desired system (PAL/NTSC), then use PGCEdit to correct certain attributes not completed by VOB Blanker, and then write using Nero.

When I open the files with Vobblanker, the first one I is the video vt. The second is the menu and one episode. The third one is 2 episodes. I just tried using pgcedit. Same promblem. Plays the WB intro. Then says incorrect disc.

It is diffently a menu problem. I just tryied playing it in a differant dvd player. Plays intro. Goes to menu. Gets weird. Goes black and white. Goes blurry. There is a line the goes up to down. Press play and it plays great. Need to fix promblem with the conversion with the menu.
