I want to find out what ps2 version i have.My model no is SCPH-50003.I think it is a v9 but i am not sure.Could somebody please help me.

Version 9 - if you have SCPH-50000, 50001, 50002, 50003, 50004, 50006, or 50007 you have a v9 or v10 board.
Version 10 - SCPH-5000x, with date code "3D" to the right and below the serial number on the back of the console. (GH-026 board)

is there any way you can install a modchip without opening your ps2.Is swap magic the only other alternitive to a mod chip.

There is a USB key is well for some older ps2 versions, but as far as i know you still have to solder one wire, on the motherboard.
But swap magic 3.6 is quite good, it is compatible with alot of titles, and doesnt cause any trouble with the console, unless if you use cheap DVD-R which will wear out ur laser.
