Hi, I just hooked up a new external (LG GSA-5163D, super multi DVD Rewriter) on to my laptop.. I Installed 1KB,of Ram, before I came down to Fla,even put a new PICM usb2 card to upgrade my speed with the USB.Hooked up a (300KB,Maxtor External HD. Tonight I put the first disk in to burn, and was I surprised to see that it took me 1 HR and 12 min to do the whole burn. I used ANYDVD, And CloneDVD2,the same thing I use at home.. At home I have a desktop,and it only takes about 30min to burn,Is it due to the fact that I am using a External burnner,or what,I would think that a ext,wouldn`t be as slow. ,or am I wrong.. I checked my Firmware it is (103) I set My Booktype to DVD-ROM.because after I burned my disk it wouldn`t play in my DVD. I brought the DVD from home and it plays all my other burns.Can anybody HELP ME? I know this is long but I want togive all the facts I can.Waiting For Help. And Thanking You IN Advance

First off, as a Junior member, you should know by now to post in the appropriate forum. But we'll leave that to you and the mods to sort out where this thread belongs. Don't think it's a one-click transcoding problem though.
You left out one big piece of info. What brand and model laptop and what processor is in use? Also, was that 1GB of RAM or 1KB? If the latter, I didn't think they made it so small. ;) If I understand you properly, you're saying you have 2 problems, speed and playability. The speed could be simply the difference in processors. Transcoding Video DVDs is highly processor intensive. Just a guess at this point, not having the necessary info. Most laptops, unless you have one of the big desktop replacements, aren't as fast as desktop PCs due to slower mobile processors and slower FSBs.
As to the playability issue, what player software are you using?

What is "it"? I've not heard the statement before that "... DVD ... plays ... burns". Were you saying the laptop plays all the other burned DVDs except a particular one or the particular DVD plays in all the burners except the laptop? That statement was a bit confusing.

As brobear stated laptops are not the same as desktops and are slower. Try ripping to your HDD first and then use Clone. I have found if I try to do an on the fly burn with my laptop it takes forever. I goes much faster ripping first and then let it compress the data from the HDD. My two cents.

To start with here is what you asked for. I have a HP, Pavillion,zt1000, with 1333mhz, Intel Celeron. Yes that was 1GB of Ram, I am sorry that I used the wrong words,I just took up this stuff when I retired (2) years ago. As for being in the wrong forum,I think I should have been in DVD for newbees,if so I will post all other questions there.My question is ,Will it take longer to download ,and copy a DVD, with the set up I have,if so is there anything I can do to speed it up. As for the DVD that I burned and was talking about,It took me over 1 hr to do the burn. I brought my Toshiba sd-2109 from home to Fla.At home all of my burns work in the Toshiba. I hope this clears up what I am talking about, and could use any advice ,or am I going to have to be happy with a 1hr burn. As Always, Thanking You In Advance./.

I don`t understand what you mean, when you said to Rip it to your HDD first ,and then use clone.. It might say I am a Junior member, but you have to take in, that I am (63) years old,and it is hard to understand what you have been doing for years.If you can explane what you mean about with the HDD,and send a step by step Instructions,I sure would be greatful,One more thing, can I use the External hard drive that I have hooked up to my Laptop,and if so HOW? Than You arniebear.

Hi, I am not that far off from your age, and up until a year ago thought the best program was a 1 clicker called 321 Xcopy, stick around these forums and you learn fast.
For my laptop which is an emachine with an 1.8 AMD processor I find that ripping which means transfering the files from the DVD disk to the hard drive works best. You can then open Clone and open your files from the hard drive and the program will compress and burn. Since you already have AnyDVD just leave it run, dl a free program called DVD Decrypter and the use these guides to rip

Then open Clone open your file that is on the hard drive and proceed. It works faster because Clone is not trying to access any disk. Here is a guide on Clone

I already have DVDDecrypter and Shrink,in my laptop. You want me to use Decrypter to rip, and then put the movie into CloneDVD2,and it will go faster then what I did before. Is it hard to get the movie from Decrypter to cloneDVD2,to burn.

All you do is select the DVD Decrypter ripped file to be opened by CloneDVD2 for the backup. It's the "Write Existing Data" selection. Arniebear has pretty much covered things.
Since DVD ROM is supposed to play on all players, the booktyped DVD should play on any. As for the Toshiba player, if you booktyped the disc you recorded to DVD ROM, it should have played. So, if it doesn't, it didn't booktype properly or you did something wrong. What media were you using for the recording?

i rip and burn normal on my laptop, and it's almost same speed when i do it on my desktop
my laptop is an a75-s206 p4 2.8, 512ram, ati 9000 64mb
my desktop amd 3200, 512ram, and 6600gt 128mb
i have only one external dvd burner the io magic.
i think it's just some of ur setting in ur dvd or it's just the celeron, also very strangely i found it very interesting i rip faster using external dvd burner rather than the internal dvd cd rw combo drive when using my laptop.

I am using OFFICE DEPOT MAXWELL 8XDVD+R,and have used them Without any trouble, I am going to try another burn tonight. I have booktyped my LG5163D, and hope it works,will let you know. I also have Verbatiam and Sony to.

hey bear on my control panel it says
Toshiba Satelite Mobile Intel Pentium 4 cpu 2.8ghz
it's normal everyday processor although these day these people are getting the intel cetrino which is ridicous do these people know what they're buying i mean intel centrino are like Pentium 3 or Celeron. what are they gonna do with the vista. they can't handle vista.
i strongly recommend the 64bit based AMD Turion for all ur folks planning to buy the centrino.

You should be okay after you booktype, Toshiba's only play -R so if you put a +R into without booktyping you should error out. I know I have two older Toshibas that only play this format finally got a drive that could booktype so I could use +R format.

Okay... The A75 with the P4 mobile at 2.8GHz is still selling for about $1250 to $1500. Surprising since Toshiba.com is selling the P35-S605 for about $1600 and it has the 3.46GHz mobile P4. Most of the Toshiba laptops are using the Pentium M CPUs though. They're not quite as fast, but they're better suited for mobile processing. The PC you have is what I mentioned before, a desktop replacement; considering most middle of the road Intel PCs are at about 3.2 GHz with an 800 MHz FSB. Yours isn't the typical laptop. Many of the laptops are much slower, including many of the Toshiba Satellites. You just happened to get the one configured for Multimedia use and not configured the same as most of the other Satellite PCs. I'd suspect the battery life isn't very good especially when you're doing DVD processing. That is probably best done with the power cord.
I mentioned the P35 in comparison to tha A75 because the 2 are the models configured for the Pentium 4 with multimedia applications. The A75 is the older model and the P35 is the current model. They are even configured with the same ATI Radeon graphics card. As I mentioned, the other Satellites are configured with the Pentium M processors and the cheaper ones with the Celeron. The Celerons were intended to be low budget affairs. Seems Toshiba has been upgrading similar configurations without regard to maintaining them under the same model letter designations. As pointed out, the P35 is the comparable current model to your older A75. So, I wouldn't worry too much about those units with the Celerons, they're intended to be low end units. The A75 and the P35 were never intended to be bargain basement PCs.

I want to thank you two,and let you know that every thing is A OK now. There was a problem with the booktype, after brobear said something wasn`t right ,I got out my guides that I printed out and looked at the booktype one, what I was doing was , clicking the OK tab on the Sucess box,and not the Booktype Box, After looking, and doing it over a couple of times, I saw what I was doing wrong, corrected it and now every thing is OK .

You're welcome. Glad you got everyting under control. The booktyping option is handy if you're dealing with equipment that is limited on the formats supported. Nowadays most players handle just about anything that's round though.
