Hello, this website has always been a great help to me. Thank you in advance for any help.
I am trying to booktype my DVD+R's to DVD-ROM when I burn movies. I'm using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter with a Memorex true 8x dual format DVD burner without Nero. Decrypter does not have a tab for Memorex in the change booktype window and will not let me change the setting. I have researched all the treads that I could find on this subject but was left a bit confused, still. Do I need different hardware or software? Sorry if I left any important info out as I am relatively new to this.

By drive model and brand do you mean who makes the drive inside of the burner right? If so, I looked that up and it should OEM Pioneer DVR-107D. How can I tell if this supports booktyping?

I made a mistake. I really don't know if that is the actual drive brand and model #. Still looking though.

If you have DVD Decrypter you can open it and go to tools->drive->capabilites and get the model#. Then go the rpc1.org and search for you firmware.

Or just look at the top of righthand pane of DVD Decrypter window. The burner model and firmware version should be listed there. :)
There needs to be a disk in the drive.
Otherwise the burner model should show up without the firmware number in either the Source or Destination menus depending upon the mode-read or write.

O.K. I got it, maybe. The model # is 43QGR00111 and firmware version 1.G.1. I went to search for a firmware update but could'nt find it. Am I making sense.

I tried downloading that firmware from the link you gave me. It would'nt install. My burner is a Memorex DVD+/-RW True8Xn. Apperently the "n" at the end makes a difference. I did however download and install firmware version 1.G.2, which was also listed at rpc1.org. So now I'm pretty sure my firmware is updated but does this mean I can booktype DVD+R to DVD-ROM now?

I would say probably not w/r to booktyping.
The n makes all the difference. Your drive is a rebadged NEC 2500. NEC firmware is available in modded form that allows bitsetting. I use this site:

Some of the NEC firmware won't flash unless the text matches perfectly for the model. Whether it will for your Memorex, I can't answer.
In all honesty, this drive is a good one but very long in the tooth. I have a NEC 2500 which is the same as yours but it's been retired for a while. Brand new burners that do a great job burning DL media, allow for booktyping, and with the newest of firmware can be had for $40US shipped at places like Newegg. If you have the least amount of interest in using double layer media, I would upgrade and solve many current and future problems at once. My favorite burners are the NEC 3540 and the BenQ 1620. There is a newer NEC 3550 but I have no info on it yet, although modded firmware is already available for it. The NECs booktype +R DL media but in the past have had to use modded firmware for booktyping +R and +RW media.

laddyboy, thank you. In reference to my earlier question "do I need different hardware or software?" It has been made obvious that the answer is both. I will most likely give the NEC firmware try, but a more compatable burner appears to be a good chioce in the long run. Thanks again to all.

If the Memorex (NEC) is really a rebadged NEC 2500 and has modded firmware that allows for booktyping, then the booktyping can be "turned on" in Decrypter as follows:
Setting Booktype in DVD Decrypter
To enable the booktyping in DVD Decrypter:
1. Place Decrypter in ISO Write Mode.
2. Right click on the burner name in the Destination menu.
3. Select Change Book Type....
4. Click the NEC tab
5. In the Change For: menu, select Drive (for DVD +R Media)
6. In the New Setting: menu select DVD-ROM.
7. Click OK
8. Repeat for +RW media.
9. Repeat for +R DL media (if applicable).
Afterwards when DVD Decrypter burns a disk it will bitset the booktype of +R media as DVD-ROM.
Nero will automatically booktype +R media as DVD-ROM if the burner is capable of doing so via its firmware.

allright, I found the right firmware for what I want(NEC 2500A 1.07 Bitsetting Bet but when a 4)from rpc1.org, but when I try to open the application file a message appears saying "Target NEC ND-2500A is not found correctly". I must be doing something wrong?

I suspect it's not going to update your firmware because it's looking for that exact text as the name of the burner. Yours likely says Memorex, etc. There are hacks that will change the name of your burner so the firmware will work. Offhand I'm not sure where to tell you to find it. I assume the 1.G.2 firmware you downloaded didn't allow for booktyping? Other firmware doesn't require exact name matches.

In the righthand pane select the file associated with this decriptor:
NEC ND-25x0A 2.18 v3 Final Test 2, supports +R(W) and +R DL bitsetting and DL burning for both 2500 & 2510!
See if your burner will accept this firmware.

No, my burner wouldn't accept the firmware. So I think I'm just going to find a new burner that comes with this bitsetting capability allready... any suggestions?

If you like NEC, there are still NEC 3540s available even though there the model 3550 is also out. The modified 1.03 firmware from that same NEC firmware sight results in excellent DL burning on all DL media, up to 9.2X ripping speeds, and + media booktyping. Cost is $40US. The BenQ 1640 is also an excellent burner and also around $40. You really can't go wrong with either. These two OEM brands probably account for a majority of hobbiest pleasures. I have the NEC 3540 myself as well as a 2500, and 3500, and a BenQ 1620. All have been good to me.
