I just upgraded to Windows XP. I cannot play my movies in my Sony
510-A DVD drive anfter installling XP and DVDdecrypter nor DVDshrink will read a encrypted movie. Is this a problem with Windows XP and do I need to go back to Windows ME in order to make backups or is there a fix for this problem. I had no problems with backup/burning with Windows ME and I like XP and would like to keep it if possible. Thanks for any help.

If those movies are the new Sony encrypted movies you need to use DVDFAB Decrypter or AnyDVD to back them up

No, these are all movies that I have been able to burn before under Windows ME ( and I have tried several different ones to make sure). So therfore it has something to do with Windows XP. It has trouble reading a encrypted movie into memory. The problem is DVDshrink nor DVDdecrypter never gets pass just reading the disc from the HD. The fix would be just to go back to Windows ME but I would like to keep XP if I can.

Berkner80,
I take it these are original disks you are trying to read.

When you upgaded is the OS in Fat32 or NTFS? Using XP you really should be in NTFS.

Did you upgrade over the top of ME or did you do a fresh install of the OS.

Did you do all of the updates for XP including SP2.

Do you have DirectX installed.

Can you post the failed DVDDecrypter log. Just copy and paste it in this thread.

Go to Device Manager and see if there are any yellow flags. If there are they need to be corrected

I did an upgrade over the Windows ME.
The message I get is " Failed Authentication" when I put the disk in under DVDdecrypter and "copy protection error" under DVDshrink.
I will try and copy the log file tomorrow.
I will also try and re-install XP to see if that will fix my problem.
Yes, these are all original movie disks I am trying to read. (ex. "Deep Impact", "Smallvile")
I'm not sure if I have DirectX or if XP in under Fat32 or NTFS but I will check. Thanks for the tips.
Oh, and BTY I can no longer watch movies using PowerDVD same message "copy protection error".

@Berkner80

Your description of the error messages makes me think that it is an encryption issue.

Try the latest version of DVDFab decrypter available at AD's software page or AnyDVD 5.4.1.1.

Cheers.

Sorry 9mmruger1, it is not an encrypter error. I have done these movies before using DVDshrink ( and not using AnyDVD or DVDfab)under Windows ME.

Berkner80,
I am not a real fan of "over the top installs of OS's. I think the problem is there. You could be in .dll Hell and unless you know where the problem is you may never find it. I take it you have a full version disk of XP along w/ the serial number. I would do a fresh install ( full format of HD) of the OS then do all of the updates ( do not forget to D/L DirectX from Microsoft site along w/ any decoder's you might need also from the site). D/l a free registry cleaner next( EasyCleaner is pretty good. If you are unsure about what to delete then do not delete it). Then install your video card, sound card. Run the registry cleaner now. Now install the Firewall and antivirus. Run the registry cleaner. D/L Shrink. Run registry cleaner and then do the movie. You can figure out I use my registry cleaner alot and have never had any problems w/ conflicts in the registry. Everytime I install a program or uninstall a program I run the registry cleaner to clean out all of the files left

Sorry, but I only have an upgrade package of XP. I will still re-install the software to see if that fixes anything, if not I may just go back to Windows ME. Thanks

Berkner80 ,
The computer repair people where I purchased my PC use the same copy of XP to put on all of the computers that they sell. They do not use the copy that comes w/ the Computer as that remains sealed. Since you have a valid serial number all you need is a full copy of XP. See if one of your friends has XP then load it and use your serial number.

Well, I fixed part of my problem. I put back my old DVD/ROM drive in my computer and it will read DVD's just fine under Windows XP( so there doesn't seem to be a problem with XP, PowerDVD,or DVDshrink). I don't think there is anything wrong with my 510-A Sony DVD burner and I will try and re-install it tonight to see XP will recognize the drive after I re-install it.
I can backup DVD's to my HD now but I will still need the burner to burn a DVD. I hope this will correct the problem.

I just switched back to using Windows ME. I got tired of messing with it. I will just have to figure out why I can't get my DVD burner to work under Windows XP at some later date. As I said my DVD/ROM drive will work under XP but for some reason my DVD burner will not. Anyway I am back to burning DVD's under Windows ME. Thanks for you help anyway.
