hey guys...I recently purchased a 10 pack of Memorex DVD+RW discs from Newegg. While the discs seem to work great in my laptop DVD-RW drive, the Optorite DD 1205 drive in my desktop won't write to them, and I have no idea why not.

The technical info on the drive indicates that it should write to discs with these specs, but every time I try to make a data disc using Sonic RecordNow or Nero Burning Rom, I get an error. The error log in Nero simply says "Illegal Disc."

Does anyone have any idea as to what could be causing this to happen?

I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

update: the drive now won't burn to the Sony DVD-RW media that it used to write to successfully. It will, however, write to a standard (Memorex) DVD-R disc.

Any ideas as to what's going on here? Why, all of a sudden, will my drive not write to RW (both + and -) media?

No offense here and I really mean it, but those Memorex are cheap media, unless you proved them with DVD Identifier or DVDInfoPro that it's manufacture id is Ritek, then that's another story to deal with.

However, the choice is yours -- either keep getting more coasters or get yourself some high quality media like genuine Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell (mij).

Really, Taiyo Yuden ROCK..!!

The quick-fix for me alot of times is to use Win XP's Restore feature to roll back any changes that were made to driver settings, etc. Otherwise, there's not enough info to go on, so if that doesn't work, you should try updating your DVD burner's firmware, go to Device Manager and uninstall drivers and let Windows re-enable it when you reboot.

thanks for the responses, guys.

with regard to the media itself, I realize that it's cheap. however, i've used memorex discs countless times in the past with no problems whatsoever. based on the fact that my drive now isn't working properly with several different brands of RW discs, I have to believe the problem is with my drive.

I'll try removing and reinstalling the drive through device manager and see if that helps. I am beside myself on this one.

Cheap media can make it look like you are having hardware problems.

Crappy media can throw your drives in to PIO mode, fail to burn, cause illegal disc, and insert blank medium error, focusing error, power calibration error, and the list goes on. Those are the easy errors to pick out, it can hide behind other errors also. Just because 1 or 100 discs worked, doesn't make the media reliable. It has to work for 1000s of discs on many different systems. Memorex unfortunately uses some of the worst media manufacturers out there like CMC magnetics. The only way to be sure your drive doesn't write to RW media is to try some good media. Verbatims or Taiyo Yudens are the best, with a few other good manufactures, but not many. Changing media from bad to good, is easy to do for most ppl. Supermedia sells genuine Ty discs and usually has a sale on them.
And if your memorex disc are CMC manufacture, you can be having problems right now, and not know it. Just becasue a disc gives you the successfull burn statement, doesn't mean it really was. If the media is cheap, the dye can break down over time, sometimes after only one play. These CMC discs do that. I have seen it happen right in front of my eyes. Trust your data and movies to the good stuff. Leave the crap media out there for the rest of the ignorant masses(i/we were all in that category once).

It really depends on the drive. I had an HP dvd writer and was having problems. I checked for updates and still to no avail, I was having problems reading and writing to some discs. I thought it was the media but after all that I finally trashed the HP writer and picked up a Maddog DVD+-R 8X writer at OfficeMax on clearance for 40 bucks. I have had NO problems whatsoever, no coasters, and have used Memorex, Imation, HP, Fuji, and Verbatim without any problems.

Bottom line, you just might have a crappy dvd writer/reader

yeah, the drive could be crappy, but it had performed flawlessly for over a year, and all the reviews I read on it were very strong.

that said, if I was looking to buy new drive, what would you guys recommend? what are the best brands/models?

Yes, changing drives can enable you to burn on media you couldn't before, probably because the drive maker has better firmware or the drive is made better. You still shouldn't use bad media, even if your burner burns it. Even the best drive/system in the world will have failures and problems if using crappy media. Take the best tools money can buy, and try to build a house with rotten timbers, on a foundation of quicksand. I wouldn't want to live in that, and your data/movies dont want to live there either. Just my 2 cents on the media issue. What ever works for you though. I have some CMC discs that burnt well, and still seem ok after a couple of years, but... I am backing those up on to Taiyo Yudens as fast as i can. Once they are on Tys, i will forget about worrying if my data is getting corrupted. I use Sony, Verbatim, Taiyo Yudens, and sometimes Maxell and Fuji. The rest of the stuff can be free for all i care.

Saugmon loves those Benqs, many ppl like pioneer, lite-ons. I've had several differnt drives, and am happy with the lite-on and LG that i have now. I have a memorex DL burner, but i moved it to my older Celeron as a back-up/extra burner. Copies came off it fine, i just dont trust memorex anymore after they started using CMC for their media. If they do that for media, who knows what they are putting in their drives. The memorex drive was made in china. I would suggest you get a DL capable burner, even if you don't plan on using those right now. Other than that, i can't think of one brand i favor over the other. Drives are getting cheaper to buy too. I got that memorex drive almost free because Nero was bundled in with it and Nero retail costs more than the drive. My last burner purchase was the LG lightscribe, and i am really impressed with this drive. It is quiet, seems to operate smoother than the lite-on, and scans of media burns off it look great. I think the LG is made in Korea. Sonys are usually re-bagged lite-ons and they are good too. I seem to be typing a lot, and not saying much.
