Playing backups... last steps?

Hey, of course I am new to this, but I have searched long and hard at different techniques to play backup ps2 games... but some do contradict each other. For things I do know.. I have a v4 ps2, cleaned the inside and have a working way for swapping discs, got myself a gameshark2 v5.5... and that's it. What sucks, is I couldn't tell what version of the gameshark I was buying, so I couldn't do much about that. But since I got v5.5, the tray automatically opens when you try to swap a game. So... how do I get around this? I've seen posts about swap magic, but do I need this, and if so where is a good place to get it? CDLoader?? Finally, is there anything else I need to do or get? Sorry, I'm just lost and confused and any help would be grand.

Yep, most of those questions don't even mention a need for gameshark... but other sources say a gameshark is a must. This is where I get confused. Even so, I see posts that show techniques where you use the shark, switch with disc magic, then dvdloader, then disc magic, then the backup. So I'm guessing I need the shark, disc magic, and the cd/dvd loader?

Ok, well if theres nothing else I need, Im going to order a flip-top ps2 case and swap magic... theres nothing else i'll need right?

I'm using a flip-top with swap magic 3.6 and that's it. I don't really know much about all that other stuff your talking about but i think that usually refers to earlier times. I believe the game shark swapping method was used before swap magic came along and those other methods for using multiple swaps are for specific games and if you are using an older version of swap magic like 2.0 or such and don't want to buy the newer version (Not positive though, this is just what i think). I've been using the latest version of swap magic and haven't had any problems playing games (except CD games make some weird noises but there are rebuilding techniques to put cd games on dvd's somewhere on the forum to make it run nicer). Also keep in mind that the swap magic cd doesnt run playstation 1 backups, you'll need something else.

Nope the game shark is not a must to boot backups. I believe if the tray opens automatically, then there is no way for your version of the Game Shark to boot backups. The whole point of disc swapping is to get around the copy protection check that's initated each time you open and close the tray. Swap Magic and a flip top will work fine, just make sure you match your version PS2 to the correct version of the flip top. Swap Magic is an excellent buy, I just advised one of my friends who is on a budget that it's an excellent alternative to a modchip. Enjoy.
