Hey all, my first post, not sure if it's in the right place but I have two dead ps2's on my hands and thought you might be able to help. Both ps2's worked fine prior to being opened. They are the newer versions with the ribbon cables. I made sure all cables were plugged all the way into the board's connectors because they both have the same problem when I power them on.
The disc will spin maybe a 1/8 turn and stop - then nothing the ps2 goes to the browser screen. I was reading about modding ps2's that there are sensors near the cd tray and that also a possible cause of this is that something is obstructing a sensor in the ps2 so that the ps2 thinks the cd tray is open so it won't spin up, is this true? If it is, where the *&*% are these sensors located and how can I check to see if they are obstructed ? Thanks in advance for any replies!!

the tray might be out allignment, but if it doesnt spin then i would say its something else, if 2 of ur ps2's have the same problem you should know how the problem started, did you open the system and then this problem started?

Well I managed to get one working yesterday... I had dismantled the whole thing to change the CMOS battery and a small screw had fallen into the cd tray right on top of the laser assembly wedging the assembly between the cd lid so it could not move - its ok now though. The second PS2 is a little tougher. I had used a long screw to screw the bottom metal bracket into the bottom side of the ps2 and the screw was protruding out from underneath the laser assembly keeping it from moving with a free range of movement. I removed the screw but the CD still does not spin :/ Any ideas?

Cool if u got one to work then it shouldnt be to hard to fix the other, have you checked all the ribbon cables, they can get damaged u know.

Yah, I checked all the ribbon cables. Especially the ones going from the cd-rom to the mainboard. I am somewhat stumped as I didn't change anything gears or otherwise, the only thing I had done was take it apart and put it back together as well as making sure the laser had free range of movement on the metal bar on the side. I suspect that perhaps the laser does not have free range of movement? Can the motor be damaged by moving the laser assembly back and forth while the unit is turned off? I don't think it is because it moves, and the laser assembly moves but cd does not spin.

I think perhaps the laser is somehow not at the position that the playstation expects it to be?? Is that possible? How would I calibrate it if this is the case.. Also, I have an older PS2 for parts. Can I / how hard is it to move the laser assembly from that one to the newer one?

Tell me the versions of the ps2 that works, and the one that doesnt work, it doesnt have anything to do with the laser, maybe the motor.

I'll have them in front of me tommorow. I know its a class 1 laser and you're not supposed to look at it, whatever. I noticed the laser lens on the newer one moves into position ok but there's no red light turning on when it goes to read a cd. With the older ps2 I have limited success with, the laser emits a red beam for a second when it moves into position. Does this mean the laser assembly on the new one is bad? if so, can I just unscrew the good one from the old ps2 and hook it into the newer ps2?
