Hi.. hope this is in the right thread etc! Been told by a mate to ask for some help, so here goes!
I currently have 2 sony DVD drives, all were working fine no problems. As it stands at the moment, they wont work! I've tried troubleshooting and it says they're fine, but still doesnt play cd's! i can put in some software disc and have no issues they work fine and read the disc and run automatically.. but when a music cd is put in.. even going through my comp and clicking on the drive, it tell me to enter a disc when theres already one in the drive!
Sorry about the long post.. can anyone help! Cheers

What changes did you make to your system recently? Normally there will be an "Action and Reaction" occurance to muss things up.
Are the units mastered and slaved properly?
Provide more details on your system.

Best to go into your device manager and see what drivers are installed. I noticed when I downloaded the trial version of AnyDVD that it replaced the existing drivers on my dvd burner so I had to reinstall the original drivers from the software that came with my dvd burner. You'll probably have to do the same.

No specific changes have been made recently.. hence the reason im confused!

The drives are mastared and slaved properly
I have an ATI graphics card, when entering an ati disc into the master drive, everything works fine, auto runs the disc, when its put in the 2nd drive it recognises the disc as being blank!
This is the only disc i can currently get to work, i canr burn anything or play music cd's!

Does the device manager indicate that both drives are working properly?
You could try uninstalling the device that does not read correctly and do a system reboot and see if that resets it properly.

It does indeed...
I dont have specific software which came with the drives to uninstall.. or drivers to re-install!

In device manager, if you right click on the device that is not working properly and click uninstall, then reboot, windows will reinstall the correct drivers from it database.

I've now got round to trying this.. and to no avail! It picks up the drives again.. but no progress, wont read cd's!
Becoming frustrating as the Drives are used regularly! Any ideas?

Okay, lets go another direction.
Can you provide the specifications of the drives along with the firmware versions?
These are music cd's? If so what player are you using?
Anyone else out there got any ideas? Creaky!

boo!...
i'd say start with the firmware... make sure it's up to date on each drive. secondly, dvd burners apparently have 2 lasers, one for cd's and one for dvd's, it's always possible you have a defective drive...however media is key also (i note that the drive is not playing ball with the ATI disk, but still.. worth checking the blank media you're using too.. - try this - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id... and 'identify' one of those discs and paste results here.. it's longshot given your description, but always worth ruling out media..
i'd start by trying just the troublesome drive plugged in on it's own, that's always a good test. and get the firmware updated if necessary for both, and go from there...

skip68,
I'll throw my $ .02 in. Have you used a cleaner to clean the lens?
