Read failure while accessing the media problem

When using dvd+/rw disks as a hard drive (ie, to keep adding, deleting files, move to other computers, etc.) after awhile the disc will bring up this error:
"Media status notification for drive X:\: Read failure while accessing the media"

It used to happen only with very large files, so I upgraded from Easy CD Creator 5 to 6 and so far haven't seen that problem recur. But with normal various sized files, eventually it will come up on every disk and only the very first directory is available that was added, sometimes not even that.

I've tried various brands of disks, same problem on all of them. I don't know if it's a problem with the drive itself or with the software. Currently I'm using Roxio's Easy CD & DVD Creator 6. Drive is Sony DVD RW DW-U18A.

It happens randomly after removing and reinserting the disk usually, regardless of how full or empty the disk is. The disk itself remains fine, I can reformat it and it use it again for awhile, might be a month before the error pops up again. I don't have the problem when using CDs, only when using DVDs.

Any suggestions how to prevent this error? So far everything I'm transferring to DVDs I have to also keep a backup copy on my harddrive, which defeats the purpose of the DVD storage.
