If you want to play backups, you'll always have to do some modification.
The easiest would be to just get a modchip installed, or buy a solderless chip that you can install yourself. The other option would be to get Swapmagic with either a fliptop or a slidecard, but you'll still need to do some work with those well (installing the flitop, or uncliping the ps2's disc tray cover on an old ps2 to be able to use a slidecard, or installing a special set of tools on the new thinner ps2 models), and swapmagic needs to be booted up EVERY TIME you want to play a backup. Or, you could get a HDD, but there is still some work that you'd have to do before you can use that as well...

Wel, sort off, but you need to put the disc(s) in every time you want to load a backup, and if you're not using a fliptop, using it becomes a tad bit more difficult.

Best way really depends on which type of PS2 you have and what you have to work with. If it's a FAT PS2 I'd start off with a Fliptop / Swapmagic combo http://www.clearxbox.com is where I bought mine
If you have a network adaptor in your Fat PS2 & a Hard Drive Laying around & you know someone who has a Modded PS2 or can get someone to put a memory card exploit onto a MC for you, you could always go with the Hard Drive and HD LOADER OR HD ADVANCED
This will only work if you have an older FAT PS2
If you have a newer SLIM PS2 you can use an External Hard Drive and USB Extreme
Here is some info
http://www.hdadvance.com/usb_extreme_how-to-use.htm
If you want to go the Swapmagic Route here is some info

If you have a fat PS2 a Slide card and Swapmagic 3.6 would be just fine to start with

Is there any way to get the memory card exploit onto the MC without running a cd?
Can I install the hdd to my pc, copy a file over, toss back into the ps2, and copy from hdd to MC?

No you can't copy in the PS2 from the HD to MC because the PS2 can't read the PS2 without the HD Loader or HD Advance Prog on the MC...
When the PS2 first boots it not only scans the disc that's in the Drive but it also scans the MC for any programs it can boot from there...

If you aren't good with soldering Swap Magic and a fliptop is the best and cheapest way to good. About $40 will get you the Swap Magic siscs and a fliptop lid shipped in less than a week. Installation takes less than 15 mins. I've just did one in about 5 minutes.

I was gonna go with the swap/flip.
I trust myself enough to do soldering but the wife thinks otherwise.
Plus I barely have time to play, so I dont wanna drop alot on a modchip to risk ruining the ps for an occasional play.
