Do you have a means of booting backups (modchip, swapmagic) ?
If you don't, i'd suggest you'd get one of those first.
No use in having backups if you can't play them, right?
To answer your question, you'd need dvd decrypter (if you plan on copying directly off a game disc) and use the backup tutorial : http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/15105

Usually, no. You'd have to buy them online (and, just to remind you again, the only kind of "boot" cd/dvd is Swapmagic).

That depends on the company, some will accept cash, money orders, credit cards, or paypall... just look around on the web and find one that suits your needs.

I use Nero to copy mine, Just select copy disc and then check the box next to copy on the fly, This does a direct copy of the disc and doesn't make any images on my hard drive. If that doesn't work, try useing ISO Buster to extract the game to an ISO on your hard drive. then burn it using what ever program you use to burn iso files.
I use an Action Replay combined with Cog swap.elf to load backups. I put the Cog swap.elf on to the USB stick and then launch it in the AR Media Player, once that is done all I do is do the Cog trick(little White gear that moves). Then I sit back and play.

it is a boot program that stops the disc from spinning and allows you to swap the original disc with any backup. You have to download it inorder to get it. It won't work unless you have an Action replay(cheat device with a usb device that allows you to load a Genesis Emulator). You can't just download and boot stuff, you need to find a game/cheat device that has a loop hole in the progame(mistake) that allows you to load other stuff.

The genesis emulator is a program that allows you to play old Sega genesis games (roms) on your ps2, and yes, for the exploits, you'll need the usb flashdrive... By the way, if you have a new slimline ps2, don't bother trying the exploits, they don't work on the slimline models. thought i'd make this clear, some kids where very dissapointed when they found out they'd wasted money on a method that did not work for them.

DVD ROM and DVDRW are basicly the same thing, except one is able to read DVDRW better than the other. And you need the USB stick to make the exploits work with out wasting a CDR.

Oh!
I didn't open mine, I just use the cog swap trick or my FREE HDLoader to play the disc. I mostly now just make a copy for incase the original image of the game on the HD gets currupt which hasn't happened to to me at all. Like I said, I just copy the disc for backup only so I can re-install the game if the game image does become currupt.

The cog swap trick requires you to take the little face plate off the DVD Drive so you can gentely move a little white cog (gear) with a little flat head screw driver. When you do that, you will see the drive coming out slowly. Once it is out enough, just gentely pull it out enough where you can put in the back up (after swaping it with the Action Replay, or the GameShark Disc). Once that is done, push the drive back in all the way and turn the cog in the other direction until you hear the disc drive lock. Then start the game by pressing [X]

@ axn666 : just get some proper DVD-R (get a proper brand like Tayo Yuden, Verbatim or Ritek, and do not, i repeat DO NOT buy Memorex)
And read through this thread, you need some way to boot backup games, you can't just make a copy and expect it to work.
@ Truballa : Yes the faceplate is the little cover with the playstation logo
