Dummy files?

Are they easy to identify? I mean I have seen dummy.dat on the boards and have run across one called pad_0.dat but thats all. I am just curious if there is a way to identify dummy files....are they always .dat files?

49. Q. I'm rebuilding game X, I'm concerned it has dummy files. How do I identify the dummy files?
A. From Hursty: When you see the iso has dummy files.i.e 00DUMMY. 01DUMMY. GARBAGE ETC, you need to get rid of them, by replacing them with a file. So on the desktop, right click the mouse, select "new" > text document and rename it as it appears in isobuster, then click enter. Then open the text document on the desktop, hit space once, then save, this will create a text document with 1 byte in it, Do this for all the dummy files you have, as some games have more than one. They're not always dat files, but very frequently. The most common places for dummy files is in the root directory of the game. They can be hidden in folders however. They're pain but you'll find em. If you're having trouble, check the size of the folders. A lot of games don't have dummy files.

Ahh....thanks....maybe....
Ah no luck, this backup will not load and I cannot find a dummy file and I have tried a straight across copy, a download to HD and burn, and a rebuild....Magna Carta is the game, I posted earlier about this with no response unfortunatly.

Not likely. Do you have a digital camera? Take a picture of the files from IsoBuster and upload it to imageshack or something. That'd help. Or simply list the files you see in the root directory of the game in IsoBuster. What kind of DVD-R's are you using?

im trying to burn soul caliber III as we speak, and the iso has a PAD_0.DAT file that is 1gb, so im thinking thats a dummy file, im gonna burn now and see if it works..
..btw, when I go hit 'burn' on nero, it asks if I wanna 'burn multisession' or not, should I hit 'burn with multisession' or not?

Hehe ironic, I just did that burn like 15 minutes ago and took out that file and the game runs near perfect now compared to the first burn.

Doesn't look like there any dummy files in the root directory. Check the folders for anything matches what I described earlier.

Yeah those are good. I use Maxells made by Ritek. Burn at 4x, if that doesn't work try 2x.

I burn at 4x the lowest my 8x disks will allow I guess. My most recent burn, a rebuild, loaded and the game plays but without music...it cuts in for the first minute then just dies until the next screen load. So a bit of success now at least, perhaps I need to rip it again.

Yeah when you rip it with DVD Decrypter, set the read speed to 1x. Go to Tools-->Options-->Device--> check set read speed, then set it to 1x. It'll take about an hour to finish, but that's the best way to insure a successful rip. Also make sure you don't have a bunch of stuff running in the background. When copying rentals or originals, that's how I do it.

yeah, I got the sc3 working perfectly, and I did do the multisession thing first, but it didnt seem to do anything noticeable to the game......wat is it supposed to do?

eh soul calibur 3 works perfectly on a straight burn. you don't need to do anything special.

Well it depends on your burner, media, software, your PS2, and your method of booting backups. It's rarely accurate when someone says well with game X you always do this, and it works. Look at games like FIFA 2006 and Star Wars BF2, it's a mixed bag on games like that.
