Just looking at some of the DVD sales this Black Friday. Best Buy is going to have Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can for $3.99. I admit to borrowing a friend's copy of MR and making a copy a few years ago. But I paid $3 just for the 2 blank Verb DataLifePlus. This doesn't include the 2 hrs to rip it with DVDXCopy (time is $$$). And pressed DVDs last longer than burned-on-dye ones. I did not include the extras people spend on printer ink for DVDs and covers. Just a thought.

LOL........just think of us poor suckers that paid FULL price to begin with...........

Good Grief, it now costs $5.19 CAD plus taxes to rent "1" new release at BlockBusters. Their "try before buy" is a complete FARCE, as they will NOT price match in my area. I would lose money if I rented then bought from them, and I would be getting a USED dvd to boot! I get the "we cannot compete with the buying power of FutureShop or Walmart"
HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH???????????????????

My local Blockbuster is still renting DVDs at $5 a pop. So many great, recent movies are selling for $5!!! And they wonder why they are going out of business. :)

Yes, I heard BlockBusters is in financial trouble. It is obvious that big corporations do not know how to do business. Our local mom and pop video stores have 2 for 1 days, Sun - Thurs, and their renting price is less. Honestly, who are people going to rent from?

I buy previously viewed from BB's. I keep 99% of pvs. This week I went to trade "1" of their previously viewed that was not to our liking and was treated like a criminal. They wanted picture ID, etc., even though the pv'd was clearly on my account and receipt that I bought it from them. With my BB card, all the information is right there on the screen. The BB sticker and upc code was still on it. I would have gladly shown picture ID if I hadn't got it from them.

BTW, I am in my 50's, so they weren't dealing with some kid. This is also a BB in a very SMALL city, not heavily crime ridden.

To Dogbomb: It took you two hours to rip and burn a damn dvd? Did you copy the whole movie including all the extras? I just want to know why a 2 hours for ripping alone?

See it's stuff like this that makes me so pissed at those idiots from the companys that throw out figures that go as high as 6 million on how much pirated DVDs cost companys. They obviously aren't costing them all that much is the retailer is willing to sell them at these prices. If it's only $3.99 then that means, wholesale, BestBuy bought them for even less (well maybe not). But this DOES mean that it only cost the studios a fraction of this.

And the other thing, on a somewhat diff. topic, is that most of the people who buy bootlegs couldn't afford to buy the original DVDs and/or the 9 bucks a person to see it in theater so it's not like bootleggers are taking away customers from the COs.

Here's something funny, I am against pirating movies. And by this I mean those guys that go into theaters that film the movie and post it up on the internet. I'm fine w/ 'backing up' though.

you have got to realise though that blank discs are now a lot cheaper than a few years ago.You paid $3 for two blank discs. For $3 i can buy 12 blank discs. So when the disc are this cheap, and with fast burners, piracy is definitely profitable.

Yeah, after the studio's initial film cost (making the movie), however millions that that cost, they make their initial investment and profits back on the box office (theaters). Gravy is the DVD sales later. It only costs a couple of cents apiece to press the disc. They have all the digital data already.

Lucrative to say the least.

I use an online movie rental place, for the price of 4 Blockbuster rentals (24.95CAD) a month I usually pull in 16DVDs a month. They must be wondering how I manage to watch 4 DVDs in one evening and return them the next day!
$.60 Per TY Disc
$1.8 Per Movie Rental
About 15Mins to Rip and 10Mins to Burn. Its actually more like 10 Mins in front of my computer as I don't actually watch the progress bar. Its worth it for me, I just mail delay was less.

@ Vicco

Im not saying I do this :) but the in store movie pass is a better way to go. You get two out at a time and its only 24 bucks a month which is what you pay now for your online. You can go get 2 more every day which equals 60 a month!! They don't have as great of a selection but hey you get a lot more movies.

Jasper44,

I must be missing something, as our local Blockbusters Canada does NOT have a movie pass. To rent OLD movies, it's $3.99 plus taxes. The only break we get is if we rent 3, then it's $9.99 plus taxes (I think). It's cheaper for me to wait and BUY previously viewed that I can keep....2/$12. Got "Crash" and "Hotel Rwanda" this week.

I recently saw "Seabiscuit" for sale at HMV for $10 Cad. Prices are definitely dropping. A lot of DreamWorks kid's movies are $9.99 at FutureShop.

Our local library carries very few dvds, they still live in the dinosaur age of vhs. In fact library books are "shared" between communities within 300+ miles. Sometimes you have to wait weeks for a book to be brought in.

discuission of reenting and burning movies is outright piracy and grounds for banning. if this is what you chose to do thats you're business, but it certainly will not be discussed here at aD.

I strolled into the local BB and they had a deal posted, $27.99 for all you can rent in 30 days. I have rented as many as 6 in one day. I am going to make sure I get my monies worth. After I run out of things to rent, I'll try the online services. But for shear volume, it can't be beat. I can do 16 in a weekend easy.
