i recently decided to make backup copies of 25 of my favorite dvds that i own.i went through all 25 of them when i was done and 6 outta of the 25 will not even load on my portable dvd player, and about 7-8 that will load and play act goofy and theres some pixialtion in the first 15 mins of the film.all 25 will load and play flawlessly on both my home standalone players.the reason i want them to play good in my portable is i work the graveyard shift at my job and like to take my portable to work on slow nights and watch some movies.
my burner is a sony dru-710a,i use shrink to encode and rip, then i have the burn with nero box checked so when shrink is done nero 6.0 opens up automatically and burns it.i recently upgraded my nero to upgrade package 1.I burn at 8x,and i use nexxtech 8x dvd-r's.i also have my shrink set at 4300 so i dont burn to the outer edges.and i have dma already enabled.
when one of the 6 bad discs is trying to load in my portable it eventually says"wrong disc format",but like i said the other 19 movies i burnt the same exact way all work fine in my portable and all 25 copies work fine in both my standalone players,no pixilation or anything they play great.so i would like to know what i have to do to solve my pixilation problem when the movie is just starting, and why are these 6 outta 25 discs not loading in my portable.is burning slower than 8x really make that much of a difference.

Using quality media e.g. Vertatim, Ritek, TY and burning at 4X will make a difference - have never seen 'nexxtech 8x' in any quality media reviews.
Do not put paper labels on your burnt DVDs

@cowl....... is exactly right..... you have a media problem.
check here for brands of media: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
if you don't have DVDInfo to identify your media, go here and download this free program: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ there are plenty of other programs that will tell you the manufacturers ID and then you can start to use good media that won't give you the problems that you are having now! And buying good media is step one. And it cost the same as buying crappy media..... stay away from MEMOREX!
Where is Creaky when you want him??? he will tell you about good media and bad!

how old are the discs that you are attempting to re burn and yes burning at 4x is recommended. If you want to burn higher than make sure the discs you are using are durable and able to take the higher spin

Since creaky isn't here,I'll jump in:
Quote: I burn at 8x,and i use nexxtech 8x dvd-r's
This pretty much explains everything. Your portable player hates that media!!!!!!!!!The burn is also way too fast.Nexxtech is basically crappola.I've seen quite a few threads on this low quality rubbish.
Your sony dru 710 is a rebadged litey and has the ability to booktype the plus format media to dvd-rom.This will help on stand alones to be able to play them. This will help when you get the No Disc Inserted error on a stand alone. Lite-on has a utility you can download for this task and it will most likely take care of that issue. It will work for your sony! If you decide to booktype, use quality plus format media. My link to that utility no longer works, but I'll try to locate another link. Try this:

@IHoe - sorry, it shows i didn't read the whole thread as i only replied to saugmon's bit..... there's been some work going on last night at work including an email outage so i changed my AD email address to hotmail (which is pap!) and i am about 2days behind on my posts so am trying to play catch up. i'll reread this one properly now :)
most others have better 'good media' knowledge than me, i guess i prefer to have a better 'bad media' knowledge personally

lol, my biggest enemy (apart from bad media!) is my bad memory...
@dvdfreak1 - i'd ask for a Nero log but it sounds like you got most stuff covered, apart from the iffy media...

im thinkin the laser lens might also need to be cleaned on my portable, ive watched 100's of dvds on it woithout a proper cleaning.
anyway when i first got my burner i would only use maxell 8x dvd-r's cause i got great burns and no coasters.i went through my first 2,25 disc spindles and decided to look in the sunday sale papers and see if stores like staples, office depot, office max, best buy and circuit city had any good sales on blank dvd-r's.circuit city had these 25 disc nexxtech spindles on sale for $6.so i bought one tried out about a dozen, all burnt great, went back and bought 5 more spindles, cause the price was right.then i get to my 4th and 5th spindle and all of a sudden im runnin into problems. pixilation, the movies will freeze up,sometimes when im burning with Nero i'll get an error at %49,and im startin to make alot of coasters and im getting ticked off.
i think im gonna go back to what worked perfectly and thats the maxell's.COLW thanks for the tip on lables,i never desired to label my movies but thanks anyways.IHOE thanks for the tip on staying away from memorex,i have heard alot of bad experiences with memorex,so ill stay clear of those.and SAUGMON thanks for the tip on booktyping, even though i wasnt aware my burner was a lite, thanks for the link.oh and which download outta the 2 would you suggest?

Dvdfreak1, Just the top link for bitsetting-other wise known as booktyping. The other 2 links I have no clue on.
You don't have to use it.Just keep it bookmarked in case some day you run into a stand alone player that doesn't recognize your backups. This booktyping actually gives you a third format to mess around with when it comes to issues on stand alones. It'll fool those picky players into playing them.It only works on plus format only.
I heard Office Depot has a sale on maxells the day after thanksgiving. They have 25 packs of maxells for $5 !!!!!
You'll either get the ritek or hitachi.Find the spindles that say made in japan for the hitachi's,but the riteks are very good. They'll all be mixed together. Slim possibility of a chance of cmags on the dash format maxells so save your wrappers and receipt.
Hold off on that lens cleaning. After ruining my first stand alone because I went by manufacturers recomendation of every 10 hrs of use,it didn't last long. I consider that as a last resort before replacement. Players do get weaker over time.I make sure every disc is clean before going into any of my drives.
Go Bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saugmon's got a good point there, it is too easy to overclean things, whether it be lasers, cassette heads etc etc. I used to overclean tape drive heads at work on our big servers, wears the heads out too quick, we had too many wrecked (expensive but luckily under our maintenance contract) tape drives replaced at that time. As to dvd lasers, I've never cleaned one, with writers its cus I'd never trust one again anyway.
I check every disc before burning and playing too, so as to limit transferring bits of crap into drives etc
