HELP - SLOW BUFFER

Hi guy's can you help me. Usually it takes me about 5mins to burn a dvd, but my buffer is going mental is is skipping from 100% to 17% and vice versa, causing my dvd to burn in over an hour. What could this be?

first check in device manager to make sure your drive is set to dma not pio[
if that is the case then you may look at your hd to see that it is not full. as this will cause your pc to look for the fragmented portions of your movie as it was stored in segments across the whole of the hd. this happened to me once upon a long time ago! and was fixed by storing all unnecessary files on media that is what it is for and defragmenting I would also look into partitioning your hd!

Sorry to sound thick though, but I can get into device manager, but how do I check if it is dma not pio????

I don't really know what you mean by it slows down. Your burn speed should be controlled at a specifiic speed such as 2x, 8x. It doesn't fluxuate. And what are you burning that is taking one whole hour?
Anyways here is a guide on how to change DMA settings witten by Alkohol:
((To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users?))
A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system", just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!
NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the ?IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?
(A) left click on + sign of "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
(B) double left click on either Secondary or Primary IDE Channel (burner's driver are usually "Secondary Channel")
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!
***NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the above steps.

Right let me try to explain this in more detail.
When I watch a dvd on my pc, it skips every few seconds causing the sound and picture to freeze/go unny when watching the dvd.
When using dvdshrink to backup a dvd, it usually takes me about 30mins to rip a full 4gig dvd, but is now taking about 3 hours.
When burning an iso through Nero, it used to take about 15 mins to burn on my Pioneer 106D burner, but now takes about 1 1/2 hours.
If you use Nero, you'll notice a buffer level at the bottom of the screen. This fluctuates between 100% and 0%, skipping every few seconds. This has caused me to believe the problem lies within the laser, as I've never had a problem before. I tried cleaning the PC base unit as it was dusty but to no avail. Maybe I could get a dvd lens clenaer cd thingy you can buy, but doubt it may be any good.
However, failing all that, my burner may just be knackered full stop.
Anyone recommend owt???

As GlueEater said, Check and make sure your DVD drive is still in DMA mode and not in PIO mode. Do this to see.
Click start/control panel/System icon/Hardware Tab/Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controler
Then right click on each IDE channel and click properties then click the Advanced setting Tab and there you should be able to change the DMA and PIO Mode settings. Make sure it is in DMA mode.
If it is in PIO mode and won?t let you change it to DMA mode then delete your DVD drive and restart and windows should reset it to DMA mode.

Well if your audio and pictures are 'funny' then it is usually 2 things/ Bad media and burning too fast. What media are you using and what speed are you burning at? I reccommend using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, Sony and Fuji are alright but only if they are made in Japan. And burn no higher than 4x, if you are using bad media then go no faster than 2x.
