Hi,
I use to basically take a dvd and put it in the drive, use decrypter to rip it to the hard drive to strip the encryption off of it.
THen use shrink to take out the trailers, subtitles, etc.
Now that decrypter is gone basically I am looking for a new tool to strip off the encryption and one that hopefully won't be gone soon. I looked into dvdfab? Is that good or what are the other options, free is good?
So with dvdfab, I notice no option to get the titles off, etc and to change the encryption?
SO what do I do and how, details please?
Also for dvdshrink, if you want the main movie quality to be better but still keep the subtitles and stuff what do you do? Is it best to increase compression on those objects while making sure it goes down on the main movie? Does that work ok to do it and how do you do that? I tried briefly.
I also did some movies lately the old way and I get some skipping in them at various points, is that the encryption or the dvd writing? It was done with highest speed possible as opposed to like 6x or something?
should I always use what the dvd is able to do or highest the burner can do?

I only use DVD Decrypter in the iso mode.Nearly all my backups,I use DVD Shrink to rip and autoburn with Nero. On the newer encryptions,AnyDVD will usually pull off those encryptions. It's a background ripper so no extra step is involved and it's updated regularly. You can get a trial here:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anyd...

I don't use AnyDVD much, madagascar being the latest release that needed it.When I do run into an encryption that dvd srhink alone can't rip,i just simply turn on AnyDVD.

I eliminate all subtitles and extra sound streams when I re-author if compression is needed. The less compression, the better.

Skipping: This may be many different reasons: Poor quality media/burned too fast/Multi-tasking/fragmented hd/heat issue/dirty stand alone laser/paper-sticker labels, and many, many more.

Where does the skipping take place upon viewing: PC drive using the same DVD-RW drive that burned it or on a stand alone player?

1st: Verify one of those backups.Play it on your pc using the drive that burned it.Look for the skipping. That drive should play it perfectly.Verify on other stand alones/pc drives. The more, the better. You've got to find out how those drives react to your backup. It's usually the stand alone players fault. They do have a harder time reading backups,as apposed to original dvds.A lens cleaning can improve the playback, but I consider that as a last resort before replacements.

2nd: After you verify which drives are giving you this skipping:On stand alone player-maybe a lens cleaning will do-last resort.Slow down the burn speed/no labels/no multi-tasking/defrag hard drive before the rip/4x or even slower burn.
If issues show on your pc using that DVD-RW drive that produced it,run a pi/po disc scan like dvdinfopro or kprobe and see how many errors are on it.

I don't advise fast burning, specially if you have playback issues.I burn my media according to my disc scans. For my benqs using quality media, the 8x burn gives me fewer of those small errors than the slower burns.Crappy media also has to be burned even slower and maybe even at a reduced backup target. Some of those picky dvd players will magnify the problems of poor media with pixellation/freezing/jumping/skipping/and no disc errors.

4x burn is par.Better quality burners and media, then you can get that speed back up to 8x,depending on how those scans look.It all comes down to those little errors and stand alones can pick them out big time.

What's your model name and # of that DVD-RW drive?
What's the brand name/format/and speed rate of your media?

thanks so I notice all these programs out and which ones do you really need?
I didn't know shrink pulled the encryption off?
So using just shrink, what's the total process to backup a movie and take the encryption off? DO you still rip it to a hard drive?

Why was decrypter so big/is still so big? What is the big key to that program that shrink didn't do? I notice that so many people told me to use both programs when I started doing this?

Both dvd shrink and dvd decrypter will break encryptions on older dvd's. Dvd decrypter will break more than dvd shrink as it quit being updated more rescent than dvd shrink. Neither is up dated anymore. Dvdfab decrypter is still being updated and will work on most dvd's to date. I still recommend anydvd. It is being updated regularly and runs entirely in the background. In other words if dvd shrink won't break the encryption simply open anydvd and then run it through shrink again.

Shrink does rip to the hdd if able to break the encryption. If it's not able to break the encryption you can try ripping with dvd decrypter or dvdfab decrypter 1st and then loading it into shrink or open anydvd and then run it through shrink. The reason for useing other apps to rip is because shrinks ability to break encryption is outdated where others are capable of breaking the encryption.

Majority of the time I: Open up and rip with dvd shrink/re-author/double check all my settings like my burn target-benq/temp files-new folder for each new movie/and auto burn with Nero.

Different compression, different times.By re-authoring all the extra crap off my backups,I eliminate most of the compression.

Say I have a backup and my target is 4.36 mbs with 10% compression. Ripping with DVD Decrypter takes 10 mins
Opening up DVD Shrink and encoding takes another 10 mins-no enhancements.
Burning takes 15 mins at 4x speed.
Total time=35 mins on the pc in my sig.

Ripping with DVD Shrink same 10% compressed and backup target size:

Rip with DVD Shrink- 10 mins
burn with nero/copytodvd/or DVD Decrypter-15 mins.

I shaved 10 mins off total backup time by skipping the DVD Decrypter step.

Dvd decrypter is a more powerful ripper. It's more useful on damaged/bum discs. Using ISO read and write is quicker than DVD Shrink, just not file mode.

Both programs are no longer updated, but that's where AnyDVD comes in.It helps out both programs to rip. DVD Shrink and decrypter can't do 100% of the movies. You will need dvdfab decrypter/dvdfab decrypter express, and AnyDVD from time to time.Just look at: Lords of dogtown and Bewitched in all those threads.

I can't even remember the last time I used DVD Decrypter in file mode and it worked, whereas DVD Shrink didn't.Usually shrink just needs AnyDVD activated or you have to use a totally different program. My 2 cents!

Way to go Buckeyes!!!!

My main formula:

Shrink w/Decrypter auto burn

Newer encryption movies:

DVDFab Decrypter to HD; Shrink w/Decrypter auto burn

Flawless and very simple system for me. I always re-author for main movie only, as I can use my player for chapters and dont care for the extra's. If movie is longer than say 6200, then I will put it on two disks using Shrink with no compression.

I like to have a functional menu and save most extras. I rip with DVD Decrypter in file mode with AnyDVD running in the background and then I use dvdremake to edit out previews, trailers, warning screens, and adverts and then encode with dvd-rb pro/cce and burn with Nero. The folders are usually between 6800 mb and 7200 mb after trimming and polishing with dvdrebuilder and I can't notice any loss in video quality on my 52" HDTV.

I lost my freakin remote last weekend.Glad I re-author.No messing around with menus! LOL

Now on my porn: Hell yes. All the bonus stuff and menus!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's my formula:

1)Use DVD Shrink first-disabling AnyDVD-burn with nero
If it doesn't recognize a newer release, activate AnyDVD,burn with nero

2)If that doesn't work-aka lords of dogtown/bewitched:Use dvdfab decrypter/compress with dvd shrink/burn with Nero.DVD Decrypter gave me the same error so this method did not work.

3)If that doesn't work-I have to purchase dvdfab decrypter express-main movie only/ or dvdfab decrypter express-entire movie on DL disc.My demo worked on LODT and bewitched, but is expired. It is a nice program for DL backups!

Thanks, so can you just use AnyDVD and clone dvd without anything else and get it done?
Basically I want to remove the traliers, leave the menus, remove the subtitles?
Do you need AnyDVD and dvdfab or will AnyDVD remove the encryption off of these new hard to backup movies?

If I was going to use AnyDVD and CloneDVD what is the whole process, put in the dvd and then what next to take off the encryption and what to do to edit it?
