Shop4tech.com claims that it is made with the highest manufacturing quality available. I am not really concern with long data life but I am concern with coasters, maintaining burn speeds and compatibility issues. Is this a decent brand to go with. I find it very difficult to resist the price. 25 bux for a 100 spindle.

I'm not sure what the 8x sonic code out as,but if they are similar to the Manufacturers of their 4x speed-crapola!
Sonic DVD-R 4x (LONGTEN001)
Sonic DVD-R 4x (MUST001)
Sonic DVD-R 4x (NANYA-JC001)
$25 for 100? Way too much for crap.
Maintaining burn speed and no coaster?
Step on up to the quality stuff. I'm not sure what the best prices are on the web,but you can get some better media for that price at office depot of the maxells. Even if you happen to run into the cmag maxells, they are still better than those from longten/nanya/and must. If you can wait till friday, they have the maxell 25 packs for $5
The odds of getting cmags in those maxells are slim, but you'll usually get the ritek or hitachi in majority of memorex dash 8x media.Look on the wrappers for made in japan because those spindles will be mixed together with the taiwanese spindles.
Quote: I am concern with coasters, maintaining burn speeds and compatibility issues
Why bother with crap media then? For a similar price, get the riteks. Not much more for silver thermal tys and verbatim in the dash format. The plus format sales on the net are higher for some reason.
Shop4tech isn't exactly a highly reputatable site. Lots of problems from them that I heard about from members here like kivory666.Try rima/supermediastore/americal/and meritline.com. They are bound to have a good sale with the holiday coming up.

@saugmon
A little off topic I know. What is your BenQ's favorite media? I just ordered a 1640 from NewEgg today and was curious what works best. Thanks.

Well ... I'll cut in line here ... My DW1640 gets the best scans out of 8x +R Fuji/Yudens burnt at 8x.. +R Verbatim 8x and 16x discs burnt at their rated speed are pretty good, also ..
As far as -R media goes .. I've only tried Fuji/Yuden and Office Depot Riteks and the scans of the Fuji discs are supurb .. the Ritek -R kinda disappointing .. the +R Ritek scans are much better than the -R
Where DL is concerned, the 2.4x Verbatim discs burnt at 8x (yes, 8x) get great results .. by far the best .. but the Ritek made DL discs are pretty decent ..
And to novicebb .. of course Shop4Tech is gonna say that the Sonic discs are made with the highest manufacturing quality available .. Who'd buy 'em if they told the truth and said that they're cheap pieces of dung?

Hello neodave. Congrats on the new 1640 and you'll love it.
Best media for my benq 1640?
It burns everything I've tried: Yuden000-T02/Maxell-002-00/Ritek-r03/Verbatim Mcc-003/Mcc-004. Even some cmags I threw in her to try out burned ok,but scans were worse than my other quality media. Those cmags are the only discs I have that give my playback issues.
The thing about the 1640, The yuden000-T02 and Mcc-004 scan better at the faster speed of 8x and 12x!
Fewer PI/PO errors!0 coasters so far.On the fly,no problemo with the benq quality!
Just like both my 1620s,these booktyped backups will play just about anywhere 99%+ succcess rate. 1 burn coaster and 2 playback coasters this year on my original 1620.
The media I used in the 1640 is all plus format,booktyped using q-suite. Office depot +8x which are ritek-r03/Verbatim +2.4x dl/Verbatim +8x and +16x/Fuji- Yudens/and memosux +8x cmags.
The 1640 burns everything I slap in it,and plays everywhere!
Slap that burner in,update the firmware, and download the q-suite program and you should be good to go.

That new benq will gobble those up. Excellent quality media. I can't wait for the Office Depot's maxell sale next friday according to black friday.com.
20 cents each next friday-excluding the governors share. Maxell-002-00 or Ritek-r03? Yee Haw!

just to "add" to the original question....the Sonic 8x DVD-R are coded out as "TYG02", which since they are MADE IN TAIWAN, you got yourself some FAKE TAIYO YUDENS right there~ :)
while a few people have expressed their "undying love" for Fake TYs, i am not on that boat, i would suggest you STEER clear of these Sonic 8x DVD-R that are ultimately FAKING the Taiyo Yuden coding...i can GUARANTEE you right now that these are NOT genuine Taiyo Yudens...the "made in taiwan" is a dead giveaway~ :)
naturally since these are Shop4Tech's "bread and butter" media, of course they going to tell you "highest manufacturing quality available, these are great for the price..etc..etc.." it's a VERY simple marketing ploy that EVERY company that sells their "own house brand" will utilize~ :)
secondly, if you are even THINKING about getting the Sonic 8x DVD+R format, i can ASSURE YOU that you will be getting a big box of CRAP shipped to your house...do yourself a favor, don't let them con u into their crappy brand...
Sonic's 8x DVD+R code out as VDSPMSAB001 (quite possibly one of THE WORST out there...much worse than CMC MAG) seriously...
as the others have already mentioned OTHER possible good quality media, (for example the Riteks from Office Depot brand/Maxells from Office Depot too during sales); you will be a LOT better off using THOSE rather than these Sonics FAKE TY crap~ :) just for your info, i TOO have used FAKE TYs before...and they are simply attrocious, just as bad as CMC MAGs and Princos...no joke...
hope you take this warning from me...despite the irrisitably low price for this media, you WILL get burned (no pun intended) further down the line/road when you realize they will NOT play anymore~ :)
