Well the firmware page says that the latest version for you is 1.5g

Your print out does not show the version of firmware that you have, but there have been about 5 version updates from what I see.

Get it here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

Download it to your desktop and install it and see if that resolves your issues.

Cheers.

OK...well I did the download and will be testing the DVD tommorrow....I hope it works. In the meantime....can everyone tell me if the following DVD-R blank media are good to use to avoid my problems--- Memorex, SONY, Phillips, Verbatim, Ridata? I ask about these because I have some of each of these and hope that I have not wasted my money. I purchased these before I started getting the great advice from here.

If people can tell me what they have used with great success, that would be a help also.

I appreciate all the help that I have been getting and it is great to know that there is such a helpful community out there

Thanks

I would stick with the Verbatim and Sony. I am not familiar with the others from experience, however folk in the know here do not think well of Phillips, or memorex. Ridata I cannot comment on as I have not heard a lot about it.

I would, however, recommend that you study the link about bitsetting that I provided as it will assist you in making your burns play in standalones much better.

Cheers.

Meaniing philips is made by cmc mag. So phillips put their name on trash just like circuit city nextech and tdk use cmc mag junk.

I personally use fugi made in japan, ritek......usually its a crap shoot with made in japan fuji. Its either ritek or tanyo yuden. I also use tanyo yuden and verbatim.

So my top three is ritek, ty, and verbatim. You just got to download a proggy like dvd info pro and it will tell you who made the disc. If it cmc mag might as well throw it in the dumpster.

Supermediastore.com and newegg.com have reasonable deals. Also you buy office max dvd that are usually ritek. Just check first:>

Just stay away from cmc....95% on the shelf is cmc and same goes for cds too. Always look for made in Japan and you should be alright.

Ozzy,
Ritek is the company name (vendor). It's media is called "Ridata". Someone correct me IF I'm wrong.

NY716,
As far as media is concerned, I would recommend whatever your drive's maker recommends. I have a Plextor PX-716uf. On Plextor's website, it lists the recommend media type vendor (ie. -R, +R, DL, etc) for each of their drives. They recommend Verbatim and TDK, among others, for -R media. Those two is what I use, and have not had any problems whatsoever.

Since your drive is in a Sony Vaio, it probably is a Sony DVD drive. Check Sony website and see if they list the recommended media vendor for that particular drive.

Thank you Mark--I will try that when I get home.

Are there brands of blank DVD-R that will work with any burner?

ny716,

"Technically" if disks (whether it's -R or +R)are manufactured by a vendor, they should be guaranteed to work with any drive (+R,-R), however, it doesn't always work that way.

In media, you get what you pay for. There is a reason why a box (50) of, ie. Verbatim costs $30 as compared to a plain label brand costing $15 for the same number. The difference is quality, plain and simple.

What you'll find out is whether the drive vendor is NEC, or Sony, or Plextor, or HP, etc, they usually WILL recommend a quality media such as Verbatim, TDK, etc. There is a common denominator here, and that happens to be quality media.

So in the end, what is it worth to you to have quality media with a successful burn everytime versus intermittent problems with inferior media?

I personally have not used either brand. However, I have noted a lot of guys/gals here saying both of those brands are really bad media. Someone will chime in soon as there are a lot of quite knowledgable people here. Hope this helps.

The only thing that I have not done is this booktyping thing and wish there was a step by step paper for dummies like me.....because I am not understadning how to do it with my SONY DVD Recorder...SONY DVD RW DW-U50A...

Can anyone help me figure this out?

@ny716

Here is how to change the booktype using dvd decrypter:

Bit setting in DVDdecrypter will change the format of your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM which will make it more playable in standalone DVD players. Follow the following images through the sequence. (Remember to have blank media in the drive)

Click tools>drive>Change book type

Or instead of the above you could do this:

At the next window you select the drive tab that identifies your burner:

Here you select the media type that you want to book type.

Now you select the change that you want to make, in this case change to DVD-ROM

Click on the change button and you will get the success screen!

Click OK and you are good to go. Remember this process will NOT work for DVD-R media.

This setting should remain in effect until you shut down your computer. I also perform this process prior to burning a backup in CloneDVD2 and it works!

thanks 9mmruger1---but...I am using DVD Clone.....with ANY DVD....and the dvd's that I make..the players that I have can play both DVD- and DVD+ formats. If I remember reading..it said that if the stand alone players can read both formats...than that booktyping thing is not necessary....

In addition I use DVD- blank media....I have a ton of those..well about 500 blank ones...

Thank you for the continued assistance.

@ny716

FYI - when I want to use CloneDVD to do a back up I preset the booktype using DVDdecrypter and then close DVDdecrypter and open CloneDVD to do my burn. The burner reacts to the bitset change whether I am using DVDdecrypter or CloneDVD and booktypes my +R to DVD-ROM. I use this little trick all the time.

Yeah, I understood that you have -R's. I was just letting you know that there is a way to make +R's booktype when using CloneDVD. Tricks of the trade.

Not sure what to say about your other issue, except that after you have used up the -R stock that you have you can go to +R and booketype. That should resolve the playability issue.

Cheers.
