I have a PS2 Mod v12 that just quit working on ALL games. When I insert a game, the screen says "The disc could not be read." It does this on the backed up disc and the original.
My PS2 has a mod done by socalmods (which I believe is out of business) with a Matrix Infinity chip. It seemed to start this overnight since I never had a problem before this happened.
Could this just be the laser issue or is it more serious?
Is this a common problem with the v12?

LOL, socalmods don't do laser fixes.

Congratulations, you PStwo is damaged!

Basically your modchip has burnt out the laser and your need a new laser. I'm suprised the console lasted even 2 weeks. Your have to send it off for repair somewhere. But you can't send it to Sony because you voided the warranty by modding it.

For a newbie such as yourself, this a sticky situation. If only you had chosen Swap Magic instead then it might have been a different story.

You will have to buy a new laser now, when a modchip is installed in a ps2 v12 without a laser fix, the laser is prone to damage because of excess voltage, it ISNT to difficult to change the laser if your good with technical stuff, but i suggest you have it done by a professional if your not confident.

Does anyone reccomend a laser to buy or a place to get it replaced?
