I was wondering. Do you need a mod chip or swap magic to run action replay?

Only if you where to use a downloaded copy of it.
An original Action Replay disc will work on any ps2

Why does a downloaded version not work without a mod chip? What mod chip do ya recommend in the states?

Downloaded games and software just doesn't work without a modchip (or swapmagic).
I'd personally recommend you'd get either A DMS 4 Pro, Or a Matrix Infinity chip, since those are the best chips around. (for mor info, just google the names of the chips, you'll find plenty of specs to compare the 2).
As for cd's, just use regular one's (rw's won't work), and use a proper brand, since cheap cd's just don't last as long, and are a strain on the ps2's laser.

Is swap magic with a flip top a good idea or no? I was reading that modifying the new v12 ps2 with a chip might fry the laser unless ya use a neo fix. So will the flip top work just as good or no?

I still dont understand why a back up wont play unless its missing required dummy files or something.:>

Swap magic discs are pressed, rather then burned, and in the pressing process, they put in "unreadable" sectors, that make it impossible to burn a usable copy.

Ahhh...so the ps2 looks for dead sectors and if it aint there it wont boot. Hmm...but do the swap magic work as good as a mod chip or no?
