hi, i am having trouble with dma on my hd and this is the place to get help. there is some great info and tools here but i have not been able to fix it yet. before i start let me explain my situation.

i recently had a raid aray crash and had a problem with the drive size oon one of the drives. it is a hitachi deskstar vlat80. the 200gb drive was reporting as 40gb. i used a dos based f-tool from hitachi and fixed the size. the utility can also change the dma mode and that is set at ata 100.
i install the drive on my main system and dma is not active. i follow the procedure on the first page and i got it to activate, temporarily? i changed the device mode to pio only, remove the drive, restart, turn off and then reinstall. change the mode to dma and it activates :) then go back to check and it is back in pio mode?

i did this a few times with the same result. i try a different drive in the same plug and dma is active? are there any other things i can try? just for giggles i hooked the drive up to a usb controller and the transfer rate was good for a few secconds then it froze up?
please help

i figured out the problem :) the hard drive needed to be erased? not just formated. i did a hard drive sest and it was fine so i figured i could format it and be ok. nope. even though there were no bad sectors there was something wrong.
so, i used the drive utility and erased the drive. makes it like new. it puts all 0's on the drive and takes some time. after that it was fine.

ok, I guess I posted something to the wrong thread now that I see this here.
I still have a question though, if someone wouldn't mind answering me. I am not certain which of my primary/secondary IDEs belong to my dvd drive.
When I click on Configuration in Nero INfotool this is what I see
-primary ide channel
-Master:WDCWD800BB-00JHA0
-DMA off
-secondary ide channel
-primary ide channel
-secondary ide channel
Master:lite-on combo sohc-4832K
DMA on
Autonrun On
Slave:lite-on DVDRW SHW-160P6S
DMA on
Autorun on
-Sis PCI to USB Enhanced Host controller.

I have a drop down box at the very top and it shows both my drives but, when I change the drive showing, nothing changes in the configuration box itself.
Is it the -primary ide channel -Master:WDCWD800BB-00JHA0 -DMA off that I need to uninstall to fix my "No Disk" problem in my dvd player, but will play in my computer, and teh 75 minutes it took to encode and then write the movie to dvd?
I would welcome any advice.

hey freup,
I would think you would have to find out why Nero is saying your DMA is off if the settings says "Dma if available". The Dma has to be enabled, to my knowledge.

First - BIG thanks to Alkohol for this GREAT instructional guide. My secondary had somehow slipped into PIO mode and my burns went from 10-15 minutes up to 50 MINUTES!!! With this fix I'm back to my previous speed and LOVING IT!!

I vote that this guide be stickyed so everyone who is using Nero can find it and gain the same benefit that I, and many others, have experienced.

Gold Stars to Alkohol, and all the great folks here at Afterdawn that have taken this newbie from a coaster maker to a capable DVD Burner!! Thanks as always!!

@freup

What is your burner listed under what channel? Usually it should be under the Secondary. And no Nero doesn't lie. Can you post up a screenshot? If it still says "DMA is OFF," then you'll need to "uninstall" your driver, restart your system, then let Windows reinstall it for you.

Look at pictures for reference.

Hello Alkohol,
U have become the star of many forums.
And u have made the complicated things very simple.
Coming to my matter,
i would like u to know abt the configuration of my system first of all,
1) 160 gb SATA hdd
2) LG DVD WRITER 16x
3) LG CD WRITER also
4) NVIDIA Graphics card
Till last few days, my DVD burner was very much fine. All the devices were in DMA mode including the hard disk.
Suddenly from the day before,it started burning a DVD for 24 min instead of 8 min while writing in 8x.
When i checked out the reason, the harddisk was not in DMA mode.It showed DMA off in Nero INFO tool. Moreover the system performance is too worst. Its very slow.So i think that the harddisk not being in DMA mode is the major cause behind everything.Right?
So wat do u wan me 2 do Alkohol?how can i turn the hard disk to DMA mode?
How is it possible?
Pls reply to this post.

@bharatgr8 -

you'd posted your entire Nero logfile, no problem, though i've removed all but the last burn log entry. Also i've edited out your serial number..

Quote:
Nero version: 6.0.0.0
- Nero's very old, that would be ok apart from the fact that your burner isn't recognised by Nero. See 2 comments down..

Creaky didn't post it as, at the moment, it isn't the problem. However, I am one to bitch when people don't use decent media, but trust me, it's for your own good ;-)

Ok see this guide to turn on DMA
http://my.afterdawn.com/alkohol/blog_entry.cfm/231/dmaissues

And then try better brand means, brand of disks, not the drive itself.

ripper,
the problem is not with the DVD burner or something else.
The only problem is with the SATA harddisk which is in PIO mode.
I tried 2 change it to DMA mode as shown in the guide u provided.
But it again turned to the PIO after the restart.
I checked in Nero INFO tool also.
It says DMA OFF for my Harddisk.
So should i uninstall the SATA hardisk in the DISK DRIVES category in Device Manager? Will that help me?
Its shown in the guide that if the DVD burner dusnt turn to DMA mode even after altering it, then they advised to uninstall the DVD burner itself.
Do i need 2 change the slot of SATA cable once.Mabbe that would work out.One of my cousin has done that and now hes doin fine. There was no problem till date.
So shall i do that?

If you'd already tried to uninstall via its driver and upon restart it still showed PIO or OFF Mode, then it's wise to unplug the cable, wait for 45 seconds, then plug it back on. Then try to restart your system again to see if it has solved the DMA issue.

Hmmm... this maybe irrelevant, but maybe your Nvidia is having issue? Try to search for Nvidia driver via this Nero forum for more help. It has done in the past at this very forum by a few members that they had Nvidia driver and were having DMA issues.
