Is there a simple way to test if the disc was burned/authored correctly before viewing on a DVD player?

Is there a particular DVD player brand that is more adept at playing copied movies?

Most burning programs have a verify option. I find it best to just place the backup in the player and put it on fast forward. That'll detect egregious errors but not pixelation, etc. Use high quality media like Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden, as well as Maxell, Fuji, and Sony brands labeled as "Made in Japan" on the packaging for quality burns. Burning at 4X or at a maximum of no more than half the rated media speed is best for getting good quality backups.

Nearly all standalone DVD players play all media formats. Brand is not important. I would chose one that is labeled as playing -R, +R, -RW, and +RW. All will play CDs, JPEG, and some the DivX format as well.

Thanks for the response. Also, I can validate your point about burning at no more than 4x---makes a BIG differnce.
