Hello all; this is my first post here. I recently bought most of the Cowboy Bebop DVD's, and my first move (as with all my software) was to back it up.

Only problem is, I'm getting coaster after coaster, and I'm at my wits' end.

Basically, I'm using DVDShrink and Nero. I've already attempted to back it up with three DVD-R's and I've gotten three coasters back. And at $9 AUD a pop, that's $24 wasted on ....-ups alone.

My initial reaction was that the screensaver screwed it. I disabled that and everything progressed smoothly enough, till I burnt and got a coaster back.

Second time around, I updated my drive's firmware. I'm using an OptoWrite DD1601 (http://www.optorite.com/_english/web/1_product/1_feature.php?hChk...) with the most recent firmware upgrade. I tried again, I got a coaster.

Then I checked the discs I was using. I'm using a stack of TDK DVD+R 2.4x Speed Double Layer 8.5 Gb DVD's. I checked the disc manufacturer and it's a RICOHJPN D00. I looked it up and according to this (http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm) it seems to be a relatively reliable 'media' to work with.

I'm beginning now to think it's a hardware error. And considering I've only got one disc left to trial this on, I have to get it right. The HDD isn't on the same cable, as advised, but the DVD burner is Slave instead of Master, and there is a (unused) CD burner on the same cable. At any rate, getting my optimism up because I thought I'd get lucky a third time, I went through it again with DVD Shrink, Nero, the updated firmware, the checked discs and the rest.

Nero returned this to me:

For the love of God, someone help me please. I'm at my wit's end. =\

EDIT: I just noticed something unusual. One of the ones I 'canned' appears to have nearly the right amount on it. I've got an *.ISO on here that's 7,318,519,808 bytes (6.81 Gb) which works flawlessly, but the 'messed up' CD is 7,318,261,760 bytes (6.81 Gb).

I don't get it. :S

EDIT 2: Okay, it seems that everything else but the final chapter of the movie is working. So that 250-odd meg that got trimmed off was during my favorite and the lead up to the climax/conclusion. Damn.

Again, it didn't work. I addressed the ASPI drivers, the version of Nero, and even installed more memory, put the drive itself in a new machine (my proper one). The only reason it says unknown media, I think- is because that's when I took the movie DVD OUT of the drive.

In any case, here's the error log. It's either the drive or the media. I ran Nero InfoTool and it picks up the drive alright and all that jazz, even tells me the CD manufacturer (same as before). Have I been scammed into buying dodgy DVD's or is it just bad luck?

I wouldn't even use Nero. Just do a ISO Read then a ISO Write in DVD Decrypter to make a 1:1 identical copy, if you are burning to dual layer media. Here is a guide with pictures I made on how to accomplish this (the name of the guide is making a copy of a copy but, you will use the same procedure in burning to DL media) - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48358

i'd go with jmet on this one..

as to the Nero bits,
Quote:
Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1
Drive is autodetected - recorder class: Std. MMC recorder
- this burner still isn't catered for in Nero as it's being generically detected
Quote:
Recorder: DVDR/RW DD1601, Media type: DVD+R9 Double Layer
- media still not being recognised - same reason as i gave before

Right. I'll try that. Fortunately, I was sensible enough to make an ISO of it, so hopefully that should work.

Thanks for the help Creaky and JMet, I really appreciate it. I'll see how I go with it tomorrow. :)

cool, keep us posted; jmet's DVD Decrypter advice is probably your best bet here...
