I have been backing up dvds seamlessly using dvdshrink,
and nero to burn.

What can be done when the dvd that I am backing up has a portion of it that cannot be read, and the decryption cannot go any further because of a bad read???

You may just be encountering structural copy protection rather than a defective disk. Try running Slysoft's AnyDVD (free 21-day trial) in the background with DVD Decrypter or try the free DVDFab Decrypter.

Also examine the disk for any obvious defects, scratches, or filth (glue, etc.).
