The media I've had most success with when backing up my DVDs is DVD+Rs with either the MCC or Ricoh (JPNR01) media IDs.

Which would be better for PS2 backups?

Also, I can burn at 1x upto the max speed. Lower speeds are better but some say 1x and 2x is either unneccesary or may cause issues.

What's the best, most optimum speed to burn PS2 games?

I'm not a Junior... it just looks that way. :)

I would recomend no more than 4x. to be safe i normally go at 2x.
the best speed to burn at is different for everyone ofcourse as they all have different opinions. mine would be 2x though. some ps2's struggle to read + media and prefer -, especially v4's and below. but by the sounds of it, it's working for you so i'd stick with that.

Burn at half the speed of the Disc, thats the rule, don't use 16x, use 8x, they work just as fine, if you have a ps2 slimline, than keep using DVD+R, i use them too :P

Philips, TDK, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Ritek
8X DVD-R work best on my V12 (slim) and V7 and Xbox
burn them at 4X with DVD Decrypter all the time, no problems
I personally use Philips.
Have not had a lot of luck with +R but i am sure others swear
by them. Media depends on what YOUR PS2 and burner find most
compatible.
