i have been reading and there are many ways to play backups and I am looking for the best method given my current situation

I do not have a DVD/R or a spare HD so I need to purchase hardware/ I have a PS2 V4.

Should i purchase a flip top and DVD/R or would a HDD/Network Adapter with HD Loader be a better method

Thanks for any advise

go with swap magic and a fliptop. That way, if you decide you want a hd, you can just load a burned copy of hd loader. As for buying a dvd burner, http://www.pricewatch.com has the best deals (pioneer 110 is a great burner for $45).

V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

Yeah, I would go with Swap magic over the HDD.

I have racked up over 350 hours playing pokemon red. 200 hours on gold. and over 100 on ruby. That's right I'm proud of that

One thing to add that could change my decision - The PS2 is used primarily by a 3, 5 and 7 year old. Would the HDD option be earier to operate vs swapping disks?

Yeah, its easier.
your going to need:
1. official sony network adaptor
2. latest version of hd advance (3.0 i think)
3. a big hd, probably 120gigs.

Your only going to be able to have about 35 games on the hd at once.
