Hello johnfs and welcome to AD
Read the guides in my sig for instructions on backing up DVD's. They are easy to follow and very informative. And yes using these two progs will enable you to make a copy capable of being viewed in your stand alone DVD player. Neither prog is being updated any longer so you will need another prog for newer movies with encryptions, such as DVD43 or AnyDVD.

Your woes should be easily fixed. In DVD Shrink go to Edit->Preferences-Preference tab...drop down your target DVD size selection box to say custom, then type in 4300 in the box to the right. This will keep you from burning to close to the edge of the disc, where the dye in less uniform and succeptable to irregularities.
Next in DVD Decrypter...go to Mode->ISO->write...in the bottom right hand corner there is a box to select your burn speed. As a general rule select the speed that is 1/2 the rated speed of your blanks/drive.
Finally don't use Memorex, Imation, or other el cheapo discs. Select just a cheap quality blanks such as Verbatim, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, or Sony, Maxell, Fuji that have Made in Japan printed on the label.
This should take care of pausing, skipping, stuttering.

No prob and a happy turkey day to you and yours.
Please do as suggested in my last post too, and you may find that your old DVD player will play those movies too.

I almost always start with DVD Decrypter, just to see the size of the movie I'm working with. If it is a DVD-5, I rip in ISO read mode and burn in ISO write mode..you can also use this method when using DL discs.
If the movie is a DVD-9 then I close DVD Decrypter and open DVD Shrink with DVD43 running in the background. Once I've edited out the things I don't want such as audio tracks, subtitles, etc. and applied a compression that I am happy with...click backup...after DVD Shrink has done its thing, DVD Decrypter opens automatically opens and burns my ISO file.
