Unfortunately the answer is no for the most part. You will be able to download a few upgrades but say that you don't already have SP2 and you wanted to upgrade to this package then once your computer conects to the Microsoft site it will check your system for a valid code and if it doesn't find it, then it's curtains for you as far as that upgrade is concerned. You will have to purchase a new XP CD with its own new licence code in order to be able to use the upgrade function as you desire. I've heard that SP2 is available on some P2P sites but I wouldn't know where to point you. BTW welcome to AD and I encourage you to stick around. Really great community.

well actually it is but that still wont do you any good. With the new system of validating your software, the check from microsoft will detect whether you are running the original software.
Software like xp is reasonably cheap, think i paid $125 and it has service pack 2 already with it.Its a small investment but one that has some benefit especially if your like me and claim it back on the tax at the end of the financial year

I have my automatic updates on my switched to "inform me of updates, but don't download them" 'ish type option. I get all my updates & SP2 no worries.
That way round the validation fiasco is explained by Microsoft on the update site.

Microsoft "Genuine Advantage" cracked in 24h: window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all'
AV sez, "This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours."
Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:
javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')
It turns off the trigger for the key check.

I had no idea that the validation request could be bypassed. Mmmmh....interesting. Don't worry, no evil thoughts being conceptualized here, but knowledge is indeed power. Thanks Ddp.

Is there any way of doing it besides goin to the microsoft windows update site ? because I already did this and it comes up with no updates, not sure why.
Big Thanks To Jamaal10!

I don't even know if I still am able to download updates. Last time I checked, it didn't allow me to. I thought it was that I needed to use IE, and I do, but it didn't work when I used that either.

GeeStar20,
You told me about the Windows Xp Service Pack 2 for IT techs earlier.
What is the difference between this one an the regular one.
Will it make any difference on my computer?
EDIT: Damn,
There is always something that goes wrong. I finally get someone to help me with the SP2 Problem I had and now I dont got enough space on my computer to hold it when I tried to save it off the M$ site!. Right now I am on the crappy computer. The problem is I got Windows Xp SP2 upstairs but I cannot run a cable down to hook it up to this computer downstairs. All I wanna do is get the program off the Xbox site so I can get the Xbox Media Center thing on my new Xbox360. All I have to do is get Windows Xp SP2 on the computer long enough to get the program and then I can put back on the smaller Windows 98 like I had before and it works perfectly. It have everything I possibly can get off the computer deleted already except for windows XP itself, all I wanna put on is the service pack 2 thing and it wont fit!!!
Big Thanks To Jamaal10!

It is no different then the one you would get if you were to get it thru Microsoft Update !
This downloadable exe is if you have to do more then one PC like in a shop or on a Network and you do not want to be online for 20 minutes for each upgrade.

yeah but the windows update is telling me I need other updates and not giving me the update for SP2.
I could have it if this dumb computer could hold it in the memory long enough for me to get it
Big Thanks To Jamaal10!
